Hello everyone,
I recently received a photo cd of the U.S.S. Maryland from AA Military Research, which I had won in a small contest, and I thought I would share a short review of it with everyone.
The cd is organised in a very logical and easy to follow manner, upon running the cd a main index page is brought up which shows an opening monograph explaining the history of the ship whilst alongside the text is to be found catergories for the photographs divided by year, from 1917 to 1945;more on these shortly. Further catergories include damage reports (which are declassifed copies from the original ship's report),divided by kamikaze and torpedo damage, and resource links of the vendor and web resource kind.
Now to the photographs. I counted about 224 photos in the collection. As mentioned earlier they are divided by years, in the early categories a number of years are emcompassed eg. 1917-1929 wheras the WWII period is done on a yearly basis, presumably because there would be a lot of changes to the ship's configuration through battle damage repairs and upgrades.Along with each divided photo category comes several paragraphs which explain colour schemes, upgrades and operational history for that year The photos themselves are terrific, each one opened up on my screen to full size and can then be magnified even further. there is little loss of clarity at full magnification which allows for great scope in detailed examination. A full range of photos are on show here, from initial construction in the slipway, battle damage, profile, overhead, stern, bow, and even a few "life on board" shots.
In conclusion I thoroughly recommend this cd to anyone interested in building or researching the Maryland. I generally concentrate on RN ships,(being ex-RN) but the photos have interested me enough to consider building one of the "big five". I might add that the good folks at AA have told me they may in future do an RN package to go along with their French Navy cd; sign me up!
