I also saw the you-tube video on the Scharnorst & Gneisenau at sea. They must have been very unsatisfactory ships for the North Atlantic. They did look like submarines as a surprising/scary amount of water was seen flowing over the bow. No wonder the Atlantic bows were fitted. They must have been too fine forward so that there was not enough buoyancy forward, similar to the Iowas.

It is basically a frame made of .040 thick styrene (including waterline base and main deck) with sides made of more flexible .020 styrene. The deck was overlaid with .020 v-groove styrene to replicate the planked wooden deck.

For the frame, any styrene less than .040 is too thin resulting in warps.

I think many will be interested to see Gneisenau full history and ship evolution, .. in coloured drawings.

Now the '' Terrible twins '' are complete,...even if Scharnhorst drawings needs now some modifications,..... will do it later,... :eyebrows:

Cao Steve,

you are absolutely right :thumbs_up_1: ,.. that photo is of Gneisenau.

Few easy takes are :

... the 6 boxes on the main deck only Gneisenau had each side of the fwd turrets,

..... the fully coloured top turrets in red ( only GU did that initially while Scharnhorst was keeping the rangefinder hoods light grey ).....

... than the swastika banner that was a lot different between SH and GU :
Gneisenau had a larger white circle, whit a thinner black swastika painted in ( Adm Hipper had that too ),..so very easy way to realize which ship was which,....

... than if you look at the bow,..you do not see the third anchor hole that Schanhorst had and Gneisenau did not have,..... and the bow anchors are on the deck, so the atlantic bow was already fitted,.... on GU.

all Gneisenau drawings are almost done :thumbs_up_1: , .... same style as Scharnhorst.

But I do have news for Scharnhorst as well, .. as last year was full of many new discovery about many camouflage schemes :cool_2: .

By the way Steve, ... if you read on the Scharnhorst drawings the name of the researcher and maker, .. than you will be surprised,... :wave_1:

Any help or info I can provide you just feel free, .. on both Scharnhorst and Gneisenau,.... as I can do the same for all the 10 KM major warships, .. so Gneisenau included...... :thumbs_up_1:

I have just received ISW/Commander 1/350 Scharnhorst and the hullshaping and the atlantic bow is not very good. Needs carving and shaping! I think your hull will be much better, Steve! At least what I can see of your pictures.

I will build the ISW Scharnhorst, but I will order your Semi-kit for Gneisenau.

Will post a review of the ISW Scharnhorst before Christmas.

I've been dreaming of scratch-build a 1/350 Gneisenau with 15" gun armed. It will be great. Hardwares are ready (Tamiya Bismarck kit, GMM PE set, WEM AA weapon set, hull plan.......) but no TIME!
