Help with 1 350 ladders

Good morning

I am slowly building the Tamiya KGV and adding PE, I am having nightmares doing the ladders.

They have tiny nubs which are supposed to be bent at 90� to the ladder. I have mangled 2 ladders already.

Are they any tips/advice how to achieve this??? I have tried using a bending tool, pliers but no luck so far
