It still happens. An Echo II hit the Garcia-class frigate USS Voge in the Med in 1976. I was in STS A school in 1977, and remember seeing this photo from the newspaper posted in the classrooms. It made quite the impression on me.

This reminds me of the movie THE ENEMY BELOW (Robert Mitchum, Curt Jurgens) based on the novel and was the inspiration for STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN's duel between the two starships.
