I started buying these 3mm flat top LED's from eBay. Cheap, price includes shipping. Comes in a variety of colors.

You can use an Arduino micro controller. Here is an example of what you can do with LED's, check the link below. If you buy and Arduino, most if not any code that you use can be found on the internet and will not take much modifying to have your deck lights chase. I bought an Arduino but not using it for LED's.

The "special leds that are square with a small 1mm projection on the top" mentioned in a previous post are in fact SMD (Surface Mount Led) and they are available in white and warmlight tones.

I think there's a guy on Pirate that is having his buddy overseas ship them to him, so he can sell them. I don't think he's marking them up since he's not pimping a yellow star.

I have seen a model railroad lighted theater marquee sign with lights that flash in sequence around the sign (can't remember the manufacturer). However, I suspect it has multiple lights on at a time, and not just one light that circles the board.

has a bunch of inexpensive LED chaser kits. One has 36 LEDs that light one at a time in a circle and stop randomly (a roulette wheel). You could wire LEDs from your flight deck to connect to the board. Unfortunately, I think it is a large PC board. They have 10 and 16 led chaser boards, but I don't know if they can be connected sequentially. You might contact them and see if they have anything that fits your needs.

The simplest way to make your chaser (if you know how to program) would be to use a microprocessor with 40 outputs that can handle 20 mA each (TI MSP430 series for example) and write a program to turn on outputs sequentially. There are many small microprocessor boards available, but they cost $35 to $100+.

Chris What scale are you working in? How long is the part of the flightdeck that you want to light up?
That will help with the answers.
In general the smallest leds are 3mm*, there are special leds that are square with a small 1mm projection on the top, however these are not available in white.
*that is 3mm in diameter with a domed head that forms part of the lens, however you will need to file or sand down the top of the led.
Also there are leds for outdoors that may be suitable, battery operated, they can be set to on or flash. Get the white ones!
