Hey Alex-- send me please the PDF

I have always liked those boats--and that kit and especially that model anyway-

can you persuade the builder to submit it to the Gallery here at MW.com...?

Cheers

Maybe Chema Cabreros "YS Masterpieces" Tupolev G-5 Torpedoboat in 1/35th scale is good for some inspiration....

Thanks. I agree, I really am not looking to go over the top. The super detailing allows me to depict her, if anything else, close to what the boat was equip with. As for the weathering...I am looking to have more chipping showing the primer and original base coats rather than too much rust. As you know, all boats have rust but these boats were painted before each patrol so large rusting just was not there. Fading and whitening from sea spray and scum lines are more prevalent. These are what I will attempt to create. Not to say there will be some "light" crusting rust around some of the areas that would be left alone during the voyage...anchor, vents some corners.

This picture is what I will hopefully simulate of the U-69. Pulling in to harbor after the patrol. Key point for me are the chipping, faded paint, deck clutter and of course the sailors. They all seem to be have different hats.

Thank you again for the input. I am always open to suggestion as I go. :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Wow!
Rivet transfers, future, HS&salt technique, chips, washes, filters...
Man, that sounds like a real serious endeavour.

The plan looks very promising to me. The 72nd should be fine for this, although i ve never tried it out.
Its an easy thing to overdo all those weathering, but i am shure you are aware of this.
I will follow this one closely.

Good look and keep up the good work!

Thanks MLDERS. The kind words are much appreciated! I have done a little testing because of the many coats that will be added...most of, if not all the details should still be there. Most of the coats are thinned down pretty good

I figure:
1 - thinned primer coat
2 - thin coat of Future and then add the rivet & weld transfers
3 - more Future
3 - shadowing
4 - some base rusting
5 - Hair Spray and salt technique
6 - 1st light coating above and below water line (original color at commissioning)
7 - more hair spray and salt (all this should add dimension to chipping and rusting)
8 - new color from 3rd patrol, thinned in 2 to 3 applications
9 - chip, chip, chip,
10 washes and filters
11 - maybe some more chip, chip, chip
12 then the "scum" line at different levels near the water line
13 then an ultra thin Future layer

PHEEEEWWWWW! And this is just the hull???

Honestly, I am really looking forward to all this stuff. With any luck I will get a weathered boat with a nice rusting effect, just not too much. She looked pretty well worn paint wise returning to port after her 3rd patrol. Funny thing, as I mentioned to Russ just before you post, the figures are what are scaring me most of all. I have been practicing these with a couple of armor sets (1/35) and a diorama in 1/48 I am working on and of course a 1/72 figure I have. Getting better the more I do and all the research as well. Thankfully they are last!

Thanks again!

Cheers!

Hughe amount on TLC (tender loving care) used on that one.
Unfortunately (or fortunately) all of this gonna be gone under a priming coat.
Not recognisable for a passerby, but well appreciated by all witnnesses...

...great work!

Hi Russ. Thank you for the kind words! 1/72 is the scale. Finishes out around 30" in lenght. A lot of room for detail to be added but still small in some areas. I may end up having a full crew on deck when I am done....practiced with one figure in this scale so far, tiny stuff.

Thanks,

T

Did a little work to correct the anchor, kit supplied was too chunky...still unsure if I like it, it may grow on me though.

Not much of an update....Been sanding and awful lot lately. Just about completely removed all the rivets I had added onto the hull. I received the Archer rivet transfer sheet and am looking forward to priming the hull so I can add them. Still need to add a few more things to the hull and get the deck secured (this will be a while). Thought I would post a couple of the upgrade kits....

Topedo loading hatch?

Re: My U-69

by TRM » Sat Dec 04, 2010 8:26 pm

Couple of more...

Started cutting hatches to add the Eduard PE
Image
Image
Image

Started putting them back too. Added a wire handle..
Image
Image
Image

Finally, started the rounded hatch(really need to look up what hatch this is....so I can stop calling it "the rounded hatch") Removed the hatch that is standard on the Modelbrass deck. Adding the supplied replacement seemed to make it too layered. Trying to correct the rounded lip as well.

If I can figure out how to attach the mufflers to the tailpipe ??? ??? ??? I would love to prime the innards (PH) tomorrow maybe! ::)

Cheers!

Now an update...

Interior framing set
Image
Image

Put down some 1mm thick strips to pad up for the deck.
Image

Placed a support where the decking pieces come together
Image
Image

Modifying parts
Image
Image

Warning!!!! This is my feeble attempt to fill some of the "void" under the deck. I did not want to go overboard, soooooooo, I made some piping, loosely based......very loosely based one one of Simon's drawingstill need to connect the exhaust ends to the mufflers....be kind, most , if not all is barley seen. Just trying to add some definition. ::)

Removed hatches from original kit and doug-in

Going with the Modelbrass hatch with this one. The eduard doesn't match, at lest in the one picture I have of the U-69 deck in this spot.
Image

Need to add something to the edge on one side, seems to be a larger "bulging" rounded edge than the PE

More to come....
