Navy Historical Center just posted a document that may be of some use to us;
U.S. Radar: Operational Characteristics of Radar Classified by Tactical Application, originally published in 1943. If you've heard of the SM, SK, SC-2, etc., but wonder why so many and what they were for this is a good place to start.
I does not have any of the late-war radars of course.
