In 1972 ,a USMC F-4B Phantom had an enforced stay on HMS Ark Royal, because the ship was due to visit Malta ( which had bad relations with the US at that time) ,it was decided to paint the fin of the F-4B with the Omega emblem of No 892 sqn NAS,and hide it in a line-up of RN Phantoms. The American aircraft couldn`t be stowed in Ark`s hangar as the US F-4`s were slight longer ,and wouldn`t fit on the lifts (elevators).
The kit is the Academy 48th Phantom with decals from a Korean company. It was a joy to build ,and a pleasant change from my usual warships.

Regards Phil

Very cool, and interesting info! I thought the RN F-4's were the same airframe except for the engines and nose gear.

British Phantoms were slightly shorter than US ones ,only by a matter of inches, but enough for the US aircraft not to use British lifts.

Cheers Phil

Very cool. Gotta love the Rhino....

Hmm. So even with the nose cone swung open off to the side it still couldn't fit?
