I thought you might find these two photos from the 1955 cruise book of the USS Oriskany interesting. A friend of mine who owns a dive shop in Pensacola, Fla says the sprinkler heads are still on the island structure. He has explored the Oriskany many times after she was sunk there in 2007.
The purpose is to wash down the ship after a nuclear/chemical attack.

The part i disliked was the forced roll, this was done to wash any pollutant/contamination overboard, always made me queasy.
