I saw a discussion of "exercise guns" on one of the German warship threads, but there was not a lot of information. Apparently they fastened a small (relatively) caliber gun to the top of the main battery guns so they could do practice gunnery without expending large caliber ammunition.

Anyone know more details?

Phil

I remember seeing a photo of a USN setup for attaching an exercise gun (Ma duce I think) to the roof of a 5"38 twin mount. Not sure of it's employment or usage.
