Hi Laurent I've been watching carefully how you develop the plating using paper . It's a method I need to perfect for Rurik . The results achieved are excellent . thanks for showing how this is done .

Try to use Aluminium. This is quite resistable, but very good to sand and cut (even with a knife). And it provides the resistance you need for a R/C model.

Hi all ,

at last , I decided to build the two bilge keels out of cardboard , seemed easier to me than glueing some aluminium or brass ...

hereby the results , as the remaining of the cardboard , it got a coat of G4 resin , it is tough enough to withstand handling and little beachings .

Seen from above , a little L bar as reinforcement has been glued



I then applied a first coat of grey to the whole hull . this coat showed some places on the hull that need to be puttied & sanded ...

here under an area that will have to be smoothened , too much dents to me


the remaining of the hull is better



the bow at the starboard side is in better shape

Once the grey paint was dry & tough ( I waited 24 hours ) , I then put the black paint between the top of the load water line and the empty water line , don't know the name for that black strake , in french , it is called "faux col à mazout" , and after that , 24 hours later again , I applied the hull red .












that's it for today

I have to be ready for the november contest at our club ( a yearly contest where all the models built during the year are judged ) , but I don't think I'll be ready by then ...

Superb! it looks really accurate!

Looks very realistic. What about the red colour? Was it that bright? The IG Kaiserliche Marine uses RAL 3011 which tends a little bit more to dark red/brown. They have found pieces from paint of a sunken ship which led to this colour.

***P.S. RAL is german standard, I don't know it something like this exists in other countries.

Yes , RAL standards are known in the rest of Europe , it is used everywhere .

The hull red I use is a primer , sold in cans by "Motip" , the reference is 04055 , I've found that this red looks really realistic :


the grey & black paints I use are also primers , they have a semi-gloss finish, my experience with those paints is that they do fade a little after a few hours navigation on the pond ...

RAL 3011 should nearly match this Motip 04055 , but as far as we may rely on a computer screen , I'd say that 04055 is nearer to RAL 2002 ...

Before that , when I used to paint my models with a brush , I used "Humbrol" #70 , but , for now , this reference is not right to me ...

Hi Laurent - you stated in your last big update "too many dents"; but at a hull length of around 32" by 4", photos like this:



...really demonstrate the quality of the work. She looks marvellous! Big close-ups on digital cameras, lit with a low-angled light sources, always make things more noticeable than I bet they really are.

(And I'm not so far off an image like that myself - though your 2.8lb displacement (?) is a world away from my 110lb equivalent (!) )

Hi laurent . Your plating and finished paint work is excellent . Very well explained. I'm looking forward to the rest of the build. Question do you spray the finished paint work with clear flat varnish? I find this gives a good protective surface? varnish

Yes , those dents are not really noticeable , but as I'm a kind of a PITA , I want to get it right , my ambitions with this model are to go to the 2008 Belgian NAVIGA championship , just to see where I'm , so it has to be perfect and for now , it is not

About the paint , I never put varnish on it , my sailing experiences tell me that there is no need to varnish acrylic paints .

But in this case , as I'll have to put transfer lettering & decals on the hull ( ship's name & depth marks ) , so I'll have to spray some varnish on it ...

I've found in the Motip range acrylic varnishes in cans , matt & semi-gloss.

Hi laurent were is the venue in Belgian for the Naviga champs. I used to compete at Naviga in the 1970 and early 80s . Is this the "C" class championships or the motors. I'd like to go and see Naviga again before I get to old . As a matter of interest I use the Humbrol matt spray .

I just want to play in the C class , no sailing championship with this one , as this model , like all the ones with only one propeller , are not really able to go astern ...

I might change my opinion , though , I just don't know how "Zinnia" will act on the water .

My next project should be "Mogador" , a 1938 french destroyer , with two propellers , much better to sail the NAVIGA figures , but this will be in a few years , I'm a slow builder and I have a commission after Zinnia ( my very first commission , you'll get the building report here ) ...

The paint has transformed the hull of your model - it really looks great. The plating looks particularly realistic - it's hard to imagine that this is made from strips of paper!
I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more updates on this build.

yes , indeed , you're right ...

I always say that modelling is like illusion , one can use a lot of materials , as long as you get the impression it is as the real stuff , then it is ...

brass , styrene , paper , whatever you use to build your models , once the surface is painted straight & clean , it looks like steel ...

Hi all ,

I was meanwhile busy with the bulkwark around the main deck , with stanchions & deck stanchions , here again cardboard for the bulwark has been used , the stanchions are out of card either , the L shaped struts also , the whole has or will be impregnated with G4 resin :









I began also with the building of the trawl winch , everything will be out of wood , card & paper , except the shafts , the connecting rods , steam valves and brake handles :

That's looing great Laurent , i still don't know how you guys do it, i once bought the 1/250 scale paper model of the Fuso i couldn't even finish half of the pagoda structure.
