Hi Guys,
I had some time recently to start on the Mk13 missile launcher base. More importantly, I was able to run the model at the SD Model Yacht Basin between rain showers and wanted to share some pics...pics taken Feb 7th 2009...

Last month, I continued work on the aft end of the 30.5" long / 15 oz. 01 deckhouse, and finished enclosing it. This is one continuous detachable assembly, and is nearly as wide as the hull, (lesser by .625" per side), thus allowing great access to the r/c running gear mounted inside in various strategic places. The Mk13 tartar missile launcher is a resin, "kit", in its' own right, and will be attached when I get the cylindrical base and turntable finished.
I have purposely NOT added any small details on this model yet, as this thing gets run in the water, (as intended), quite a bit. This model has been in both fresh water and salt water, and gets run probably 10 times each year; more often if I counted all of the, "pool", runs. Although far from finished, the future USS Benjamin Stoddert has quite a few scale miles on her sea-frame already.
That's the way...uh huh, uh huh....I like it!
Also, I just started my 1/96 Knox last night. I'll probably start a build thread on that one sooner or later. Funny thing, I spent 4 hours working on it, and only got two deck beams installed and the rudder location drilled into the f/g hull.
I am just freakin' slow!

Yes, it's the Robbe Twin Throttle F-14 radio. I also have an old ACE Nautical Commander twin throttle radio, but it needs an overhaul and is not in use.
Fortunately, the Knox won't need this rare feature.

Hi Guys,
With all of the other projects taking precedence over this one, I have not posted since May of this year. Further more, I have not worked on this model since before that. This year is now almost over; and will be before I can blink! Alas; with my favorite 1/96 scale Fleet Run, The "Pearl Harbor Remembrance Run", coming in 10 days at Santee Lakes, (a mile from my home),I must do some work on DDG-22 1/96. She is covered with dust. The boot topping is all but worn away, ( I love Testors Acryls, but the water wear is too much for this paint type; won't make that mistake again).

The hull red color, (automotive primer), is worn away from the bottom of the sonar dome from being intentionally run aground, (normal parking procedure; probably not in any Naval manuals though), and you can see the original unpainted white gel coat beneath.

The once bright and shiny props have been, "weathered", by the mostly salt water use.

The ASROC launcher is solid resin and is too heavy. I'm not sure what to do about that; other than to scratch build one myself. The Mk13 missile launcher is in a bag in parts, and you can still smell the resin. That smell, "that resin smell", smells like........Victory! LOL
Mt52 is unfinished; needs to be hollowed out and assembled. A while back, I ruined one of the resin 5"54 Mk 42 mounts by hollowing out the gun house too much. Live and learn. The aft funnel looks really odd as it is only part of the yet to be built aft superstructure. Actually, the same is true for the fwd funnel, but lesser so.
There is much more too.......let's see what I can get done in the next 10 days. I'll post NEW pics asap.

Why don't you hollow out the ASROC launcher? You can disect it at the bottom of the rocket canisters, replace the bottom with styrene and hollow out the inside of the rectangular part, as well as the interior of the base... Unless you feel positive that you will scratchbuild a better looking one...

Would love to see some pics of the unassembled Mk 13 launcher...

Looking forward to any progress...

P.S. By any chance, do you happen to have any info I asked you about?

The prop guards are awesome... I do not know about US navy but we used to wrap rope around the horizontal bars in order to protect them from scratches and paint wering off...

As much as I learn from all the builds on the board, I learn about motivation and continued progress/improvement watching threads like this where I see incomplete ships being enjoyed. Operated, enjoyed, showed off to friends and fellow builders then taken home and more work toward the final goal.
Lesson for me. Get it built enough to get on the water, skills, details, missing information can will develope during construction but enjoy it.

Well stated. I have had more fun with this model than any other I've built, and it's not even finsihed! This model already gas many, many scale sea miles.
Latest effort:
Bridge top deck house adjacent the fwd funnel. This is one of those ship specific assemblies, as DDG-22's was different from most of her sisters. This deckhouse had the tripod mast center leg descending through the fwd facing bulkhead; whereas many Adams DDG's had the center mast leg penetrating through the center of this deckhouse.

Hi Guys,
Aft superstructure construction begins. The Nelson Pettey's resin cast, (hollow), Adams Class Funnels really sped along this process. I got tired of looking at my DDG running around with naked funnels.
Step one was to determine the attack. I decided to make the inner structure and add on the external platforms etc.
Gotta to go to my second job.....see pics...

After two days of effort, the aft deckhouse is finished. I will not be adding any detail just yet, as I'm just trying to get all of the s/s sub-assemblies finished with the basic construction. Having 1/96 scale plans and photos galore sure makes this job a lot easier.

Your work, here, is tempting me, Tony. I'm starting to have positive, second thoughts about a 1/96 AVP. You're making it look too, easy.

But, I still don't have any desires for an R/C model. Just a static one.

Looking good, Tony! Looking forward to your rendition of the aft deckhouse; that's where I spent most of my time on Barney (when I wasn't on watch in after-steering; don't ask) as Missile Radar was on the upper deck of it.
