I continued today with the steam engine, bringuebales etc...

I also printed out a test copy to see where I was at. I'm very happy with the size of it... 14 mm wide between the 2 gipsy heads.

It allowed me to validate the new Mono X FEP film, great!

It only took him 37 minutes to print this windlass on the backing.

The quality is very good. You can see the nuts and bolts perfectly. It's better under a magnifying glass in real life, the photos have difficulty rendering the print quality.

The scale of the piece looks good in relation to the hull. I still have a few details to add, steering wheels.

 Yes Tom, it asked me for a few dozen hours of drawing...

I'll try to print it with Sonic mini tomorrow to compare.

I can well imagine the it took a lot of drawing and research! Be interesting to see the printing comparison.

I searched through all the videos and photos of the visitors and others available on the Internet for the documentation. I made a lot of screenshots. But there is still a lot of mystery about some details of this windlass. The mystery will be removed when I myself will visit this museum. It is programmed for our second visit of this magnificent country.

These brand new resin printers bring us closer to our designs, we are much less frustrated with the result of the printing compared to the "old" models. I can't wait to see what the next developments in low coast 3D resin printing are going to be. It's exciting!

I will try to reduce the size of the control wheels, the circle is 0.35 mm thick and the spokes are 0.3. This part is a bit oversized because of the limits I had set for a first test.

Pascal:

With my modest experiments I have found that I also have had to oversize some delicate parts. Sometimes these will print, sometimes not. The delicate parts are too small (and fragile) to reliably measure in the printed model but appearance wise, mine often appear considerably finer than in the original drawing. This could be a function of exposure time?

Yes a visit to the real item when possible is optimal. I was able to add much detail to my "Missouri" from several visits to her at Pearl Harbor, taking many hundreds of photos. Many things remain un revealed and sometimes restorations or museum ships have various modifications.

Cheers: Tom

Could be, Photon S do the same thing.

New Photon Mono X do inverse, It's wider..

I finished the windlass, it was an exciting design to do, but quite long, this type of steam windlass is quite complex and compact. Unfortunately I don't have all the technical information, especially on some anchor chain sprocket dog clutch controls.

I will now get down to the printing of the small parts, and the front part of the hull which is also now finished.

There's something written on this fly wheel, I couldn't figure out what, so I winked at the construction shipyard.  :D

Looks like the recesses in the large flywheels have latches on top that can lock the wheels in place? Clever piece of machinery!

Possible, because there is nothing to prevent the winch to walk back with a hawser after the steam supply valve has been closed off.

General view.

Thank you Jim, coming from you and your knowledge in this domain is a great compliment to me.

I have been following closely the assembly of your "Normandie", my grandfather was a mechanic on this magnificent liner and made the last trip to New York.

Your project is the most beautiful realization I have ever seen of this ship, without sycophancy. :thumbs_up_1:

Printing of the second half-hull test this night, 8h30 printing with the Mono X Anycubic.

It went well this time I had reduced the tear off speed to 3mm/s instead of 4.

Everything is well printed, I have a small problem on the foredeck plank only on the port side, but it's my fault, I had removed the under plank on that side, a mistake, the battens were only resting on the hull and as it's not uniform, it was not resting on anything in some places, it's unforgivable.

The bulwark reinforcements at the bow are a little deformed, it's very thin, 0.2 mm maybe, I'll have to reinforce them a little. The ones on the first deck are well printed.

I was able to place the windlass on the foredeck, it is too big, -10% on its current scale will be perfect.

The rest of the details came out well, especially the hull sheets. They are just prominent as they should be, it will look good when painted matt black. Adding 3D rivets is feasible, but I'm afraid to overload the program with a thousand more items.

This bare half-shell is already made up of 700 different objects.

Time for photos, the hull is not completely cleaned.

Pascal:

Thank you for all the progress photos and explanations. This is very helpful in figuring out things to look out for and ways to cure them. I, in my inexperience have had issues with items coming out printed in sizes other than specified. Sometimes I have had to go back and do an as built measurement then add a fudge factor to the sizing and re print. The other factor you mention is having to sometimes re design the part when pieces do not print well, usually too thin in strategic places.

Cheers: Tom

Yes Tom, it's a fact, I think you have to re-evaluate your drawing every hundredth of a scale, it's a minimum, so that you don't have any problems when it's printed.

This goes through the thickness of the pieces but also the simplification, unfortunately, of the design of the object.

And never hesitate to do it again. Analyse the errors, correct them and never give up! :heh:

I started printing the forecastle's equipment. It came out very well, better than I expected. Even the windlass flywheels, which I had already reduced in thickness, came out well with 10% of the basic scale down...

I am amazed at every impression by the new machines. The Photons S is far behind. What will the Chinese and Taiwanese be producing next year?...

The vents look like a somewhat difficult shape to derive?

Nice work! Tom

Thanks Tom,

With Fusion 360 it's not too difficult, with a bit of experience you can achieve something credible.

It has powerful functions to make the work easier.

A friend of mine who specialises in the Titanic told me that there was one less port hole on the starboard bow, an eye of Lynx:

For the record:

That number 3 port hole was perpendicular to the bulkhead of the Ladies' Lounge. So they removed it at the design, the plan must be anterior. Only to starboard.

The two aft mooring bollards of the forecastle have also been moved, they have been moved because they were badly placed in front of the front doors, and not very practical in terms of mooring.

I have also modified the floor design, but not the design of the floor, which is too technically complicated.

I added the anti-roll keels.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Displaced bollards, they are used for spring lines.

Image

This photo serves as a reference, it was taken at the time I made the model, the first year of operation.

Image

Subsequent photos: here the bridge shelter is already in place, the aft flagpole has been moved. The big mast will be moved later from the first deck to the bridge deck at the rear of the bridge, it must have obstructed the view to the bridge and probably also hindered to board cars on the first deck.

Image

We can see that the bulwarks at the front and rear of the first deck have been cut to take the cars without cranes, perhaps on ramps.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Exploded, more than 600 pieces make up this part, not counting the elements that are not there, windlass etc...
