Hello Song, Very good work indeed. the wood work is excellent. Just for reference, If you need some help, have a look at my posts - especially the aircraft hanger. The front end was slanting up to opverlap the ship's funnel uptake. Cheers. Paul. |

Hi Song your detailed work on the funnel uptake is superb. Strange you seldom see Scharnhorst as built. I quite like the original build configuration. None the less you always set the bar high with your builds which makes viewing them inspirational. Dave Wooley |

That is, it was more reminiscent of the bows the RN had at the time. I could be wrong, but I have a soft spot for RN ships and kind of like the look of the early bow, too. |

Hello Song. Well done your work is just fantastic. Hello rtwpsom 2 - I would like to take this opportunity to shed some light on the real reason for adapting the Atlantic bow. First of all, it was common practice for most European navies to build warships with straight bows, and Germany was no exception. As a matter of fact all the warships constructed in the 1920's and early 1930's were equipped with a straight bow. But the bad experience suffered by the Scharnhorst, forced the German High Command to redesign the bows and modify all existing major vessels. The Scharnhorst had a low freeboard, thus during heavy seagoing, water used to enter through the gun turrets and flood the front compartments of the ship. Thus it was decided to modify the ship and add a sloped bow - the famous Atlantic bow. Upon trials, this modification proved to be worthy, but the ship still suffered the same illness when undergoing the heavy Atlantic waters, especially during seastorms. The Bismark, Prinz Eugen, Bluther, Hipper, Graf Zeppelin, and Gneisenau, had their bows rechanged. The Tirpitz which was built at a later stage was launched with the Atlantic bow in place. Cheers. Paul. |
