Sorry it's been a while since I have updated Garibaldi and it's a bit late Andrew but Happy New Year and I hope you had a great Christmas Break and thanks for your comments :thumbs_up_1: ADM you are way to kind thanks for liking Garibaldi :thumbs_up_1: Ok I have been spending some time on her now which is feeling good! I had some time last week due to extreme hot weather here in Adelaide that I got her plans out and went over her super structure and used lots of white out and glued blank paper on those areas so I could redraw her with her latest configuration.
As well as this her flight bridge has also had lots of changes done and my plans don't show this so out came the plans and the photo's so I could redraw her flight bridge, just so I could make scents of all this I made it out of cardboard so I could see if it looked right before making it out of Styrene.

I have also started the Super Structure after redrawing her plans.

Wow just saw your ship on Youtube. Think you have plenty of excess power. Good to get out of trouble at least. Now all you need to do is slow it down, A LOT!!!

Thanks Kevin young for looking in on my build I hope it will be awesome when I finish her, Mick she does have some speed but that YouTube video is at reduced power :heh: I need to take some footage with full power just for a laugh! You will never see a carrier with her nose out of the water and bum down lol all the air wing would fall off. She may look a little quick in the video but at the lake she looks about right :woo_hoo: just got My laser cut bridge windows yesterday so I can now continue with her super structure. Will post some pictures soon. Scott

Thanks Jorge I can't wait either for the detail thats when these models come alive! It's been a real struggle to get some good time in the shed at the moment with a 5mth old in the house so my progress has been a little slow but thats cool I'm still moving forward and Garibaldi is starting to come alive and some of her Super Structure that I have been scared of for so long as I had no plans for the refit specs has started to come together and it's looking the part! I have been making the Flight and Nav Bridges and both these are going to be removable by sliding out from the main S.S. and this has taken some brain power to try and think 2 or 3 steps ahead while making. The idea of this is for Painting, lights and Maintenance, I also called Russ French and sent him up a diagram of all the bridge windows and their different sizes so he could do his magic and laser cut them for me. As I said before baby steps. Scott

Looking really really nice there Scott, that laser cutting is really brilliant! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

You guys are so much faster than me, wish I could keep up but my "real job" keeps getting in the way - currently in Kuala Lumpur  (But you have to pay the bills somehow)

Keep up the good work and pics Scott, they are very much appreciated.

Andrew

Andrew it seams like a life time has gone by since we last spoke or had our builds going at the same time! would love to see if you have had any progress on your Slava class? Your work must be taking up way to much hobby time :mad_1:

Thanks Dave, I really couldn't think of any other way for the bridge windows so that they did have that sharp look about them but if we go back before we had laser cutting it would have been all done by hand! Nooooo! :thumbs_up_1:

Well it's been over a year since the last update on Garibaldi! pretty bad on my behalf but I have been working on her so heres the latest. As Garibaldi was scratched built she had a few areas on the hull that I needed to go back on being around her stern and starboard midships.

After fixing her reworked areas I started to glue her platform edges on

And this lead me to working out and ordering all my platform supports that I had laser cut.

OK we have some more progress on Garibaldi, these are her forward starboard aerial mounts

This has been a very interesting piece to make as this section was added on at her refit and I don't have plans of it? so I drew this section from photos and had the side piece laser cut so it had that same finish of the bridge windows.
Image
It turned out fantastic!
Image
Glueing the pieces together and working on it as a separate piece made life so much easier

After this section was done I started on the main funnel and this piece changed the look of the superstructure a lot.

Garibaldi has a lot of vents on her superstructure as well as her hull so I made some masters up and made moulds so I could do cast resin ones.

Hot damn, that's a lot of work! Is this gonna be a static build or an RC model?

Hi Sean thanks for taking a look at my build and yes she is a 1/72 scale radio controlled model. can't just have fun building her :woo_hoo: after all this work need to sail her around and have some fun that way too. I had a friend of mine that I asked for some advice with Garibaldi's main masts (being the shape of them and turning them) but before I could ask Bob the question he had already asked me for the plans and before I knew it he had turned the masts out of a chair leg and a curtain rail! love it, so I went to work and made a master of the base of the mast as the two main masts share the same shaped base. Once this was finished I made a mould and in no time had two resin cast bases, with the base for the SPS 48 it was slightly smaller then the other two so I attacked the master with a file and produced the base foe the SPS48.Image

Amphion, Dave and Kevin thank you for your words of encouragement it differently helps to stay focused as this is a huge build and is taking some time but that's my fault as I have finished two other models in this same time frame. Let's see if I can stay focused to finish her. :thumbs_up_1:

What kinds of planes and/or helicopters are you going to fit her out with, Scott? I'm sure there's loads of appropriate 1/72 scale kits out there, which ought to make a relatively refreshing (i.e. less complicated) break from all that scratch-building! :D :cool_1:

It's been way too long since I've worked on Garibaldi! Sorry for the late reply Sean and Tegunn. Sean I have a couple of Agusta Westland AW101 Merlins, 5 AV-8b Harrier II Plus jets and some ground crews to go on, but I'm going to leave these till last just need to get this project done. Tegunn thanks for your kind words :thumbs_up_1: So I've jumped back into this build again trying to pick up from where I left off :heh: first I grabbed the two piece rear deck ceiling filed and sanded to fit inside the hull, reason for this is to be able to remove and gain access to the rudder as well as detailing the boat deck areas.
Image
Image
Still lots of work to be done in this area but should be easier with these being removed.
I think it was about a year ago I started working on the Bridge window walkways, only having completed half the flight bridge! I have now finished both.
Image

Nav Bridge
Started making her additional platforms that Garibaldi has on her Superstructure, these were made with the help of making cardboard patterns first and then building the frames from them. This made it a lot easier as well as testing for size on the model as I have no plans just photos to go by.

How did I miss this thread! What an amazing skill you have! This is your first scratchbuild ship and you got everything perfectly done! I am extremely envy of your work! Such an inspiration for me to build my own!
