Scratch building is a lot of fun and repeatable tedium. Some pieces such as the ubiquitous 5"38 twin mount can be used on both my paused CB1 project and the Missouri re build. Well worth casting! Shown is the master and one of the Missouri mounts. I turn the barrels out of 1/16" hardwood dowel, which also makes turning the muzzle in a dremel tool quite easy. The Alaska ones have the Bucklers. Hatches, bits and chocks are other good candidates, then there are the ABM's, Chaff projectors etc. Alaska and Missouri also shared Mk 38 Directors and Mk 37 as well, again worth casting.

Here is a small selection of some of the pieces in 1:192. the almost invisible wooden speck is a loud speaker, many of which are strewn all about the superstructure.

Cheers: Tom

Current state of affairs for the superstructure. Repainted all the weather decks with Model master USN Deck Blue, including tops of twin 5"mounts. Added some rail, lights at the truck, some small signal lamps (turned of woof and not yet painted) binnacles on the bridge wings, and who knows what. Always things to add or upgrade. I find the Tom's rail a bit soft and super easy to damage. Some straightening or replacement as an ongoing project.

Rather amazed at how much miscellaneous "equipment and furnishings" can occupy even the small area of the stern. A few more items to add, as usual!

Working on the bow, Discone Antenna and supporting structure. Constructed from bronze and steel wire, plastic, wood dowel and who knows what.

Another bow shot, second anchored in deep water just off shore.

Thanks GW! For the overhead shot I stood on a chair with the ship sitting on white foam panels. My feet are in the photo! Not having Google Dirt on my studio computer I ended up using a portion of an Atoll photo.

Cheers. Tom

Thank you song. Should you decide to build a modern Iowa I can provide you with many close up photographs. The problem I am having is I am not running out of things to add, but scratch building many of the small bits is rather fun and thought provoking.

Regards. Tom

Next project which I have been avoiding is the Admirals Barge and Captains gig, then of course a couple of 26' motor whaleboats... Making good progress on the Gig, carved from cedar (a favorite wood and I have a lot) and sealed and modified with red auto glazing putty.

Photos eventually! Tom

So the question is, how did you build it? Did you carve it from a block of wood? Looks good! The whole ship as well of course, love the overhead shot! :thumbs_up_1:

I will post a shot of the incomplete hull. It is carved from a cedar block with a balsa a sheet top. The basic hull shop was modified with autobody glazing putty (about like green putty but you can get it anywhere, cheap). That also has the benefit of smoothing and sealing the hull. I still have to add shaft, prop and rudder. The top is made from two blocks of 1/4" plexiglass carved to shape, polished and painted, with the windows masked. The putty is especially useful for emphasizing the flare at the bow. Getting the cradle blocks just right is a bit of a challenge. I made a set of trial ones with heavy Bristol Board (a heavy linen paper) and adjusted as necessary, then using those as templates.

Still have a ships boat to produce for the stbd side.

Cheers. Tom

Gig hull as under construction: cedar blank cut on bandsaw, 1/8" balsa top deck; laminated, rough carved with small sanding drum on Dremel tool, hand sanded then faired with red auto glazing putty. Several iterations of this. The photo shows the hull near final contour. The cabin tops are from solid plexiglass, which allows a representation of small windows and an impression of an interior. Sanded down to 2000 grit the polished with jewelers rouge. You can see the addition to bow flair on the deck. The balsa deck allowed easy minor hollowing of the cabin area and easy insertion of lifelines and deck cleats.

I've seen plenty of models that look like real life, but that aerial pic looks like a model!

Absolutely fantastic work though, Tom! That one is a show-stopper and is made doubly amazing because it was scratchbuilt. :worship_1: :worship_1:

Jason:

The problem with the aerial photo is a divergence in lighting, to be convincing I would have to cool the color temp a bit and make sure the lighting was discreet from the right direction rather than diffuse. Just having fun!

Looking forward to more progress on your projects! Tom

Looking through my hundreds of photos (there may be too much information) I keep adding small detail that probably does not show up on any drawings. My photos do not cover every area of the ship so further research is necessary. I did repaint the hull upper works with a home mix of Testors artists airbrush colors and recoated the heli deck. Just running around and adding small antennas, pipes, mast items, turret details and on and on. Some of the items not painted as yet. Things to add such as a brass ships bell fwd, for which I need to obtain the proper material. Anti fouling needs a re coat, Mr color #29 if I can get some or may make my own. I expect a hiatus in ship building over the holiday but perhaps I can scrounge some items that are hard to find locally.

Regards to All! T

Looks like I have a decent paint mix for re spraying the hull red (close match) with Golden brand Pyrole Red 40%; Burnt Sienna 40%: Black 20%. Probably will need a little further tweak with some spray tests. Great to get away from hobby paints which must come from far away.

Cheers: T
