Hi everyone, thought I'd post a few pics of my new / next project!

HMAS Brisbane AWD Hobart Class Destroyer.

"The Hobart class is a ship class of three air warfare destroyers (AWDs) being built for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Planning for a class to replace the Adelaide class frigates and restore the capability last exhibited by the Perth class destroyers began by 2000, initially under acquisition project SEA 1400, which was redesignated SEA 4000. Although the designation "Air Warfare Destroyer" is used to describe ships dedicated to the defence of a naval force (plus assets ashore) from aircraft and missile attack, the planned Australian destroyers would also be able to operate in anti-surface, anti-submarine, and naval gunfire support roles.
Planning for the Australian Air Warfare Destroyer (as the class was known until 2006) continued through the mid-2000s, with the selection of the Aegis combat system as the intended combat system and ASC as the primary shipbuilder in 2005. In late 2005, the AWD Alliance was formed as a consortium of the Defence Material Organisation, ASC, and Raytheon. Between 2005 and 2007, Gibbs & Cox's Evolved Arleigh Burke class destroyer concept and Navantia's Álvaro de Bazán class frigate competed for selection as the AWD design. Although the Arleigh Burke design was larger and more capable, the Álvaro de Bazán design was selected in June 2007 as it was an existing design, and would be cheaper, quicker, and less risky to build.
Three ships were ordered in October 2007, and will be assembled at ASC's facility in Osborne, South Australia from 31 pre-fabricated modules (or 'blocks'). ASC, NQEA Australia, and the Forgacs Group were selected in May 2009 to build the blocks, but within two months, NQEA was replaced by BAE Systems Australia. Errors with the first hull block and growing delays in construction led the AWD Alliance to redistribute the construction workload in 2011, with some modules to be built by Navantia. An option to build a fourth destroyer was included in the original contract, but has not yet been exercised. Lead ship Hobart will enter service in March 2016 (two years later than originally predicted), Brisbane is due to commission in September 2017, and Sydney should be operational by June 2019."

Made up one oiling tube and soldered both to shafts. One of the oiling tubes was missing. Not the neatest soldering jobs, but they won't be going anywhere

Finally had a day off work and had a play with the grey girl. Running sets fitted to shafts and A-frames and the rudder shafts also. I've used the generic rudders you can buy from any hobby shop. The actual brass rudders are not to scale and the wrong shape so ill mold the correct rudders around the brass stock. This should keep them very strong. Have also test fitted the sonar bulb at the bow and playing with marking up stringers. I won't put any decks down until I've made up the stabilisers and bilge keels.

Couple more things, cut out the dip astern for the fantail. Just like the Spanish f100 the hobarts have this cutout also - like the FFG's. Something i found odd as the hull is very very close to the Arliegh burkes, yet they have a flush flightdeck. This hull is also superbly accurate! Cut out the main deck and fantail for a test fit and to see where I would need to place stringers. Both decks and the forecastle just slipped into place!

Ok, enough done today otherwise ill be shattered for work tomorrow! Test fitting bilge keels Filling the dome to bow with bog Once keels in place brass rods are bogged into place Once set and dry, ill resin the pins inside the hull as with the shaft and a-frames. I may also paint the inside white as some others have. I like the idea of a clean and crisp looking interior.

These past couple weeks have been a crazy one for me so even though everything is baby steps I'm enjoying the few minutes I get to spend on her. I've still got the Newcastle to finish but its a nice change for my brain as I'm a little FFG'd out for the time being Back to the Brissy and her baby steps but some small updates. The bow dome was completely plastibonded and sanded the foredeck and stringers beneath have been epoxied and plastibonded also. Made the stabilisers and attached similar to the way I attached the keels so they're quite strong and should take a bit of punishment if it ever arises. Still playing on the rudders which is difficult from the small F100 plans and photos. I know Russ makes all these but my budget (wife) will allow me to purchase the fittings hopefully after the new year but that's it so it'll be slow going for now. Anyway I do like to at least try to make things first. I've also primed the interior in preparation for spraying it white.

She's Huge! For me anyway. When I picked her up, we put it against robs russian cruiser and scharnhorst and its tiny in comparison. This is as large I'm comfortable with... For now As for speed, depending on the motors that will be eventually used... After seeing one of the TF72 guys arleigh burkes at speed.. Is fast a good enough answer? Haha definitely as fast as a scale 30knots that's for sure.

Haha it was more to test for leaks where the shafts and struts etc have been cut into the hull. Definitely a dry ship.

And the Burke was not a proven design? Although I see that it would be much cheaper than a Burke considering Hobart's much lesser specs when it comes to weapons etc. How big is this model truly? There is Always a limit to size of models one can handle and store. It's good to think about these things before embarking on a quest to build a huge, impressive and expensive model. Hadn't noticed the styrofoam box support method before, I guess that would solve a lot of my problems as well, since I'm using seperate pieces of styrofoam which keep flying around when I'm around the water. This type of box, perhaps with some weight inside, would solve that problem! Great idea!!! Curious for any progress on this build, we don't have that many modern, large scale ships on this board!

Hi Neptune, the arleigh burkes where designed to be operated in conjunction with a carrier task force and fulfill the US requirements, basically overkill for the RAN. To meet the RAN interests the arliegh burkes would have had to be reworked from the ground up to meet Australian Navy requirements this is where it wasn't a proven design and would have required much more testing and money. This might explain it better than me, I just like the lines and that its Asutralian "The Hobart Class Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) will be one of the world’s most capable multi-purpose warships. In selecting the Navantia-designed F100 as the baseline platform design and coupling it with the Aegis Weapon System, the Australian Government has ensured tomorrow’s Navy has the best equipment to defend Australia and its national interests. Since entering service with the Spanish Armada, F100s have worked alongside US forces in the Persian Gulf as the first foreign Aegis equipped ships to be fully integrated into a US Navy Carrier Strike Group and have successfully been deployed as the flagship of NATO’s Maritime Group Standing Reaction Force. The Hobart Class AWDs, which are under construction at three shipyards in Newcastle (NSW), Williamstown (Victoria) and Osborne (South Australia) will provide air defence for accompanying ships in addition to land forces and infrastructure in coastal areas, and for self-protection against missiles and aircraft. They will be capable across the full spectrum of joint maritime operations, from area air defence and escort duties, right through to peacetime national tasking and diplomatic missions. The AWDs’ Hobart Class Combat System, built around the Aegis Weapon System incorporating the state-of-the-art phased array radar, AN/ SPY 1D(V), will provide an advanced air defence system capable of engaging enemy aircraft and missiles at ranges in excess of 150 kilometres. The AWDs will carry a helicopter for surveillance and response to support key warfare areas. The surface warfare function will include long range anti-ship missiles and a naval gun capable of firing extended range munitions in support of land forces. They will also be able to conduct Undersea Warfare and will be equipped with modern sonar systems, decoys, surface-launched torpedoes and an array of effective close-in defensive weapons. These capabilities will ensure the AWDs have the layered defensive and offensive resources required to counter conventional and asymmetric threats. The Hobart Class Combat System will be amongst the most advanced maritime warfare capabilities available and ensure the RAN has unprecedented levels of interoperability with Australia’s allies. When Australia’s AWDs enter service in the next decade, they’ll be part of a fleet of around 100 Aegis equipped ships operating across the globe and will spearhead a quantum leap in the RAN’s air warfare capability." Thanks for liking my styrene box! It's my cheap and light solution for keeping the model steady in the car. Ill eventually make up a box so the ship can travel inside that which will have a foam base and cradle to support her. This will be attached to roofracks on my car. As she is she will fit in the boot of my car with the one of the backseats down comfortably, it will just be a pain getting her in and out once detail is added, so the box and roofrack will make it an easier operation. The bridge superstructure and mast will be built as one piece which can travel in the backseat She's not small at all coming in at 193cm overall length and 24.5cm beam so very beamy and only slightly smaller than an arleigh Burke.

Hope you all had a great Chrissy! Haha thanks Sean! Well we don't have that white stuff here but plenty of yellow stuff! Was allowed some free time this morning up before everyone else. Making up templates for the rear of the hanger and hanger roof. She's coming along now decks etc are being added. The plank along the bottom of the hull will be the base for the batteries to sit on.
