There are sanding sealers but I have never had much luck with them on balsa.

One thing you might try is a liquid epoxy paint. This is a very thin two part mix that is used on model airplanes - I think they use it to seal balsa motor supports so fuel won't soak into the wood. You paint it on and it soaks in. When it hardens it produces a hard surface that can be sanded to a nice smooth finish. I have used it to seal plank-on-frame boat hulls.

On balsa you might need multiple thin coats. Try it on a scrap piece to get used to using it before putting it on your boats.

It's been a million years but, IIRC, yes, dope would work. Great looking work.

Be careful using super glue. It produces quite a bit of heat while it cures. I once soaked the end of a drawstring cord in superglue to bind the frayed end. It took up quite a bit of glue and after a few moments started smoking! I dunked it in a cup of water before it caught fire. I have seen similar warnings elsewhere.

So be careful how much super glue the balsa absorbs in one coating. It likely won't be a problem, but it would be a shame to have those nice boats go up in flames!

Hi Herbie,

nice to see progress from your side ! Always inspiring, and for sure following your Yamato learning curve prompted me to start the 1/72 Rodney...

One buck per hour, still one of the best cost/pleasure ratio for any hobby this side of doing nothing at all.

Please go on and post more photos !

Stephane

Herbie,

When I first saw the white "padding" on the Kirishima superstructure railings I assumed it was bedding. The Japanese used to hang bedding on the railings to catch splinters - I first saw this on the Mikasa in Yokosuka.

But does the padding on your model actually represent bedding, or is it permanent padding to protect the ship's boats while they are being hoisted out of their cradles?

Phil

Hi
I have seen a few photos that she had anti splinter bags everywhere

Whether or not what I have built is 100% accurate I won't guarantee, but then again, post 1941 for most jap battle wagons
is always a struggle

Answer to other question on Hull..................God knows, can anyone tell me if Tim from southern cross models is still in business?
He took another order for a Kongo last year...............so that two
And the website says available now...........

Its nearly 4 years I think.
