Thanks for the tips again. Both of us have just got back home from our piano concert. It was a great experience and we really pleased the audiences! Really tired, though. It is already midnight here :heh: Anyway, we have done a bit more on the skinning, but tomorrow will be designing some more Lion parts. Maybe I might want to post progress of the 3D designs... Tired, tired, tired.... :faint: :faint: :faint:

Heavy sanding, a coat of antifouling red spray, and she looks like this:

Still needs more sanding...and a bit of filling.

I have done nearly nothing to the hull so far, but have been very busy with 3D designs til now. I just want to post a few camouflage schemes that I made and might consider applying on my model. The first one's pattern is very similar, while the colours are identical, to HMS Warspite 1942 camouflage. I got the pattern from an image after some googling. Source is a video game called Naval Frontline:
Image
Here is the next one. The colours are identical to the Rodney's, with some colours excluded, as you can see. This is again from a video game, named Atlantic Fleet. I don't play both games and any other games as it is quite wasting time, but they sometimes give you some ideas, especially the wonderful World of Warships! I created a painting of the Amagi 1944 battlecruiser entirely from screenshots of some players on the net! I just hope WoWs will add a Lion class soon so I can see other details that they may create and then add them to my build...
Image
And here's the last one. Just the standard scheme applied to most ships:
Image

The colours seem quite weird and inaccurate, but I did use the colour picker to (try) create identical colours to the RN chips colour charts. Though with slight modification to make them more contrasting, especially the 507B and 507C.
I like all three of them. Maybe other schemes are very nice as well, like the Renown's and Resolution's, the KGV's 1944, etc. Maybe some of you can help/suggest some camouflages I could apply to my model? My brother told me we should keep her as clean as possible, to retain her beautiful outlines, and also to not disappear into the KGVs, most of which I would apply camos unique to each ships on my (future) models. But anyway we'll see.

If you take the last one, you can paint the turrets in the same blue as the hull patch

Thanks for looking in EJ! That is very very interesting indeed! Now I can paint the turrets blue! But, when was the scheme first employed? I just want to keep it early-war style, as the late war will need a lot of modifications and I don't want to do a late-war model with no modifications...it looks stupid to me!

Oh, these schemes are late war. The first one you have is Warspite-like and can be applied for early war, the second scheme is more midwar. If you want early war you can apply the First Admiralty Disruptive schemes; I like them most

Do you mean the Warspite-like one?

Those are nice, but still, the Lion painted with those colours will simply turn her into a second Prince of Wales...
I really like the blue strip/turrets one, but hmmm... :heh: I will need to work out the pattern for it as well.....quite a lot of work...

Can anyone tell when the aircraft systems were removed from the battleships line of the Royal Navy? Something in 1943-1944? Or maybe anyone knows what battleship was the last one to have the aircraft removed and when?
:heh:

Thank you for the links, David! Those are very helpful! I should have found them way earlier, so many questions wouldn't need to be asked. So, it is still OK that I could imagine the Lion to be the last ship that had the aircrafts removed, some time in 1945. So, the blue patch and turrets camouflage could be done, then!

Thanks to EJFoeth and DavidP. Now I have some ideas of what to paint her. :thumbs_up_1:

Hi guys,
I am designing the Lion's upper superstructure (from platform no.2 upwards) and thought about how I would build this part on my build. I think making shields on the rims of the decks (what is the specific name for this, if any?) from styrene sheets look a bit too thick. Marijn Van Gils and some others use brass shim and they look really great. Should I go with that, and if so how thick should the shim be at this scale (1/350)? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

There are several options for the splinter shields. Brass strip is very thin but requires some folding exercise to get right (so good to try that). RichardP used paper (viewtopic.php?f=59&t=159885). I used 0.25mm thick styrene strip; for 1/350 that's ok, would not use it for 1:700 tought. The disadvantage of brass is that you need CA to glue it and it's more difficult to correct alignment errors. If you handle the model a lot, most shields tend to break (after a while)... If you want to add the top lip to the shield, brass is probably the least easy method.

Thanks for the help again, EJ. I will look into thin plastic sheets first, then. I actually have a small stock of 0.3 thick styrene sheets. 0.05mm difference is not too much, so I'll use what I have then. At least I feel good that I have the material without needing to buy new ones!

A small update on the hull. Some more planking done. We also added 0.5mm plates to both sides of the rudder skeg. The profile plate is 0.5 thick, so the skeg is now 1.5mm thick; about the same as Tamiya PoW's. Next, we are going to glue one big plastic plate to the bottom of the hull where it is flat. Here is a photo showing her as of now:

We really like the dirty sanded surface! Maybe we're too excited, but this is our first scratch-build hull

Here is the latest camouflage I made. Blue hull patch and turrets.

I still don't know if the Y turret director should be painted blue as well or not.

Roofs of the secondaries too

Note that there's some equipment on the turret roof that is not blue, so I guess the director can stay in the hull color.
