Thanks! I think this will be quite an interesting camouflage for my model. Also not breaking the hull lines as well.
Til later!

Yes I intended to model her in early war config, but I also want to put a camouflage on it as well. A camouflage that will not break her hull lines and blend her into the KGVs, which are quite similar from a distance/glance. Still, maybe I might paint her overall grey, so as to make her truly early-war. Then I could later consider building another sister, Temeraire in a late-war camo plus modifications... Anyway we'll see. Thanks for the tips too!

Hi Aop & Aur,
You are doing great! I like the colour scheme you've chosen as well.
I'm not sure if you've come across this painting before but there is an artist Frederick W. Bumford (active 1979–1986) who has painted the four of the HMS Thunderers built from history including 1781; 1877; 1912 but he also painted the lion class HMS Thunderer that was the fourth lion class that of course was never built. He painted this in 1986 but it is interesting because it's an artists impression of what she may have looked like at sea...
Thought you might like to have a look at it.

Yes, I think it is not interesting to model the ships in class the very same period, or very same camouflages/appearances.

Thanks a lot, Phil! It really means a lot! I have seen that painting before while doing an extensive research on the Lion plans on Google, but didn't see what the name of the artist was. He is a good painter. I would assume he used some of the plans and a few photos of the KGVs to create the painting. Both my brother and I are also painters, so we admire a lot of paintings as well. We are soon going to make a boxart painting of the Lion for a 1/700 resin kit we designed to be released under Tom's Modelworks. So that will be the second Lion class painting on the internet! But regarding the kit, we still cannot promise though, as we would need to get more of the designs done. At least there will be resin parts, PE and instruction! 1/700 Rodney's 16" barrels can very well be used.

Thanks for looking and comments/criticisms are appreciated!

I'm a little concerned by your planking method... you should really try to ensure that no two adjacent planks terminate on the same frame. By doing it the way you are at the moment, you are introducing significant weak points in the hull that will allow it to distort or even fracture.

You should be aiming for a planking pattern that looks something like this:

Code:

  |            |            |            |            |            |
============================|=========================================
=========================================|============================
==|===================================================|===============
===============|===================================================|==
============================|=========================================

Thank you for the advice. I know too that it would create weakness. I will take that into account when continuing planking.

Thanks!

An update on the hull planking. This is my first post in this thread. Things are going very slowly, but still going... I helped Aop sanding the hull and it turned out quite OK. We haven't used a single bit of putty for the further planking, just a small amount of Green stuff at the seam of the flat bottom plates. So far the majority of filling is simply super glue, which works extremely well. The hull is getting really strong and quite heavy too! :heh:

Although almost two weeks with no update on this build, we are still working (slowly) on her. Shapeways offered a free shipping promotion for orders over $25, which expired yesterday at 11:59 pm PDT. I couldn't resist such a nice offer, as the normal postage fee to Bangkok is $20. So I ordered my designs of the entire upper superstructure, Y turret director, and HACS directors. While waiting, I will try to finish the hull.
Edit: Wanted to add some renders of the designs I ordered! :)
Y turret director:

HACS directors:

Superstructure parts:

Then cylindrical mounts for the aft pair of HACS. This is cheaper comparing to buying an Evergreen tube pack and use 1/50 of it. :heh:

Til then! :wave_1:

I ordered a 1/350 Nelson/Rodney barrel set from B&D Barrels, which are made using CNC cutting. The first set arrived over a week ago, but the portion at the barrel holes were slightly incorrect. It should taper outwards, but the set has it inwards, so I requested the owner, Bruce Buchner another replacement set. It was very kind of him to redo the cutting program and send another set to me without paying any extras or returning the previous set (Thanks Bruce!). Now when time comes, I will make mountings for them. I must thank Maarten Schönfeld for providing a detailed instruction on how to make them! :thumbs_up_1:

Hi all!
After a while of no updates and some signs of laziness (3D printed parts!), I am now back working on the hull. Must say I still work slow. Here are some shots of the planking underway. At least I got much more done since the last update on the hull. We've been busy practising the piano, preparing for another concert. At least she looks like a Lion now! :joker:
Image
Image
Still a lot to go, but once the 3D printed parts arrive, all we have left is the after deckhouse on top of the aft superstructure and some boats, masts and funnels, then the main parts will be done! Then we could move on to detailing... We're quietly pleased with our first scratch-built hull, even though something is completely off! Keep sanding.....!

Cheers!
Aop

Hi Aop,
The hull is coming along very nicely, and it looks like staggering the cladding is working out much better. :thumbs_up_1:
Good luck with the concert!

Thanks a lot for the kind words! All worked out well, thanks to the great advice on this great forum.

We'll do our best at the concert, too :big_grin:

Thanks Steve!

My 3D printed items arrived three days ago, but I didn't have time to post anything at the time. Here are some photos of the parts after cleaning in warm soapy water:

Edit: forgot the directors and mounts!

And finally, the mounts for the aft pair of HACS:

Image

Note: the HACS and Y turret director are the only parts printed in frosted extreme detail plastic; the rest is printed in frosted ultra detail plastics

I must say the new parts look really good. I designed all the splinter shields to be 0.3mm thick (Shapeways minimum thickness) and even thinner at the outer edges of these and also the ventilators on the bulkheads of the no.2 platform. I thought it wouldn't be printed well, but they came out very nice!

I have primered the parts already. Here are some pics:

All parts (except the directors) need further refinements. I will sand and grind most of the rough surfaces. Then I can add details.

Cheers! :wave_1:

Phil, indeed they are really good. Even more impressive than the last time we ordered...Shapeways might have done something new...
Here are some shots of the dryfitted 3D upper superstructure.

Before the 3D printed parts arrived, I spent some time assembling the Pontos crane. It proved to be extremely difficult as I did it a year before and damaged a few things. Bad side of being a kid! The crane disintegrated several times during the construction and redoing never seemed to end, just when I put my hands on it!!! The small rails on the crane shaft (?) got a lot of damages way back as well. I left the piece out of its fret and the heavy things were dumped on it in the cupboard for months! I'm glad the rails just broke off and nothing too serious happened! Oh well, I'm complaining too much now... :heh:

I also added doors details

Here is the Pom Poms director platform underway. Details added and portholes drilled. This structure really costs me a lot to buy more PE doors! 8 doors for such a small structure!:

Cheers all and thanks for looking in :-D ,

As per DavidP's advice, I ripped the splinter shields off and sanded the glue spots smooth. Then replace the circular platforms. This time, the shields are wrapped around. Here is the result :smallsmile: :

Hi Aop,
Yes the 3D parts look very well made, they are so smooth and it looks like they have done an excellent job. And of course assembled, the superstructure looks so good!
I don't know much about 3D modelling but if I've understood you correctly, you actually "drew" the superstructure parts on your computer? Is that correct? Well that's pretty clever, I can barely draw a straight line in 'Paint' and that has a straight line tool! LOL :big_grin:
And then you send the file to Shapeways who 3D print it for you.
So how do you draw them on your computer and is it difficult? I suppose I should Google that one because it is very interesting.
Keep up the good work, looking forward to seeing more. :thumbs_up_1:
Regards,
Phil

Hello Phil!
Yes I am very happy with the 3D parts. They are really fine as we see, thanks to Shapeways!

Regarding the designing stage, it is not difficult at all! Of course it might be a bit unhandy at first. I use a software (program if you like) called 123D Design by Autodesk, which is the same software used by Steve aka ModelMonkey (and he was the one that recommended this), but he is far better! Actually what is involved is not just 'draw', but extrude, loft, fillet, shell, merge, subtract, etcetera, to shape up objects. Drawing a straight line is very easy in this software (and any software actually.) At least doing so is easier than MS Paint where you have to check the alignment very carefully and not moving the mouse! There are many tutorials out there on Youtube on using this software. Also note that it has some limitations too. It is easier to use comparing to other more complex (and expensive) CAD programs, but is unable to design things too complex, for instance an accurate hull. Nevertheless if you are using it for the basic parts, this works really well. Not to mention that it can be downloaded free of cost and is capable on both Windows and Macs.

Yes I 'upload' the 3D files to Shapeways. They accept STL, OBJ, X3D, DAE, Collada or VRML97/2 (WRL) Then after uploading, you could scale them, fill in titles, descriptions, render poses, selling, price, etc. Then you got a model uploaded on your shop! :thumbs_up_1:

Best wishes!
Aop
