I have been slowly gathering bits for my USS Albany build but finding time to make a start has been the issue!!
The hull arrived several months ago from Tim at Southern Cross Models I gave the hull a good clean and a quickie paint job one day while bored and did a ballast run at the local pond a few days later with one of the lads towing it with his WW2 tug.(back in August)

USS Albany is 2.85m long with a beam of approx. 30 cm and draught of about 12cm. Last week presents arrived from GT Sitek in the UK! Custom order of Props, shafts and A frames and aluminum rudder (although I forgot to say I needed intermediate A frames too....oops! So I will be ordering those next week). I have had 4 excellent SAGEM motors put aside for this ship for sometime (these motors originally used in old Telecom exchanges...ballraced at both ends about 3000rpm low amp draw)

Today was nice and sunny so I headed out into backyard and began cutting out all the shaft exits and A frame slots. Tim marks out all the location's very accurately and once I had all the holes drilled it was a simple job to do a test fit to line up all the shafts.

Had to do the inboard shaft rear A frames slightly different from Tim's markings as the inner leg would have been too short(and I don't have the gear to resolder a longer bit of brass on properly) to reach the marked spot, so moved the inner leg in 20mm and all good.

Here are some progress pix.

this will be a very slow build due to low cash supply!! first test run will probably be mid December using Rx and ESCs out of USS California and my Burke (yes building an Arleigh Burke too....)

Cheers Bruce

When you get to work on the Talos system be sure to check my web page:

www.okieboat.com

I have a lot of information, drawings and photos of parts of the Talos system.

You can find patent drawings of the Tartar system in the US Patent Office:

Patent 3,065,673
Patent 3,088,375

Phil

Your site is a right pain! I get stuck for hours looking at all your awesome Renders!!!

I have a Talos from Shapeways (thx Sasa!!) it is gorgeous...will be getting another one eventually too...once model building budget regenerates....

I will have a look at those patents!! I can get the spg51's easy enuff, just need the twin arm Tartar launcher.....

Cheers Bruce

The patents I posted are for the twin arm launcher. However, I don't know if it was the launcher used on Albany. Patent drawings don't contain many dimensions.

Nice project! Can't say this is a huge project since it is rather small among those other ones! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Yup compared to my LHA she is small and lot easier to move about!

I think the best spot for the support leg hole is actual very close to the line denoting shaft axis...so I shall fill all the holes and redrill once the P frames arrive.

Ordered uni's and various brass inserts Sunday night too.. according to Cornwall Modboats shipped this morning! So we shall see how long they take to get here!! :heh: :heh:

Nearly half a kg of fibre reinforced bog to fit all the bits!! here are some pix.

Merry Beermas!!

Well its all in (except support P frames still waiting on them and couplings before I can setup motors) just discovered I need to buy a rudder servo....thought I had one in my parts stash but no joy!

I use these ones : Towerpro MG996r $8.50 or so bucks off ebay! metal gears and hi torque.

Now that's progress. Those rudders look pretty sturdy and heavy, although I guess weight isn't exactly an issue with this size of ship! :cool_2: :thumbs_up_1:

Cheers mate!

Rudder is machined from 6mm Aluminum (it should be (about 10mm thick)beefier but this was the biggest Ally sheet George had on hand....plus bit less drag!!)

Will post some more pics of hull bracing tomorrow once I find damn USB cable for Camera!!

LOL...yep but still shorter than my LHA or Long Beach!! (but they are both in 2 pieces..) Its a really nice hull, super strong and was soooo easy to fit the running gear into!

Cheers Bruce

progress update!!

Over Xmas break got hull bracing and deck edge stringers done.

In the last mail before New Years long weekend the motor couplings and intermediate support frames turned up so I fitted motors and support frames over weekend and made up some battery trays today. Will glue trays in once I have done a ballast test and painted inside of hull.

Took USS Albany down to our spot at Delfin Island, West lakes (also known as DIMTR....Delfin Island Missile Test Range 8-) 8-) ) for a driveline test and ballast check ( 4x 3kg 12v 10ah SLAs (out of CGN9),1x 3kg wt aft and 2x 3kg wts(out of CGN36....) and 2x 2kg wts fwd. (Total wt of 12kg of batt's and 13kg's of wt's) Still needs a bit moved aft slightly but finally ballast will be very close to this.

I borrowed the ESCs out of DDG53 for the test run, not sure if I need to run 4 escs might just use 2 big ones....

Test run was good, motors are super quiet, reasonable turn of speed but not Warp speed like LB. Turning circle is pretty large with all motors at full ahead but can be tightened up by cutting power to motors on oneside. She makes a nice clean wake as shown in pics...

Only negative of run was a couple of leaks around an Outer A frame leg and a support leg, but nothing a coat of resin shouldn't fix!

Here are some pics...

This build is paused at present due to other projects, she sits up on the shelf waiting for me...I have some new 775 motors to go in shortly so I might do an update after that.
