Well it’s time to come clean with the next scratch build and it is the new Russian OPV or corvette the Steregushchiy . Project 20380 is quite a different warship from the warships of the Soviet era in incorporating many stealth features in to the design and western build technology and practice .

The model
Having giving some thought as to the method of construction I've opted for a departure from the previous longitudinal plank on frame methods of construction I’m going to experiment with double diagonal. This method gives both light weight and a very strong hull. Using very thin timbers of only 0 .50 mm thick planks of marine ply. The first layer is applied at 40degrees from the keel then a second layer also at 40 degrees but in the opposite direction over the first layer . The only problem is having to provide for 10 or more stringers the length of the hull across and down each bulkhead. Although I have seen the results of this method I have to confess this will be my first attempt at double diagonal .

Running gear is ordered , timber ready so some cutting out can be undertaken. Reports may not be as frequent as in the past due to other contractual build commitments for the magazine .
At 1:100 scale the model measures
Scale 1:100
Length 1m 40mm

Beam 130mm
All the timbers prepared
Image
This project has been in the planning stages for over 12 months and I have been very much looking forward to making a start . Thankfully being an OPV/corvette the hull at 1m 40mm is very manageable in my small workshop So the next job is cutting out all the bulkheads , laying the keel then into uncharted territory !!!!!

Yes!!! Can't wait to see this one develop. :thumbs_up_1:

You know, this would make a pretty respectable LCS; better than the U.S. Navy's, at any rate.

Do you have a set of plans or are you working strictly off photos?

Is that a variable depth sonar hatch cover hanging off the stern?

Great to see that you've started the build Dave! I'll be following it closely, especially the masterclass in Kashtan construction! :wave_1:

Thank you all for your interest in this project. Steregushchiy was laid down in December of 2001 and entered service in 2007 .These OPVs are part of a Russian drive to regain expertise in naval construction greatly diminished when the Soviet Union disintegrated and a need to stimulate exports of light warships. Apart from the small Gepard OPV the Steregushchiy is the first Russian developed warship having extensive stealth characteristics.
Carr
The drawings were produced by an naval architect friend who was familiar with the features incorporated into the Steregushchiy design and has produced an excellent "ship yard" interpretation of the lines and part of the superstructure . I say ship yard as there are numerous numerical reference not required on a model makers draught. As yet the drawing is incomplete as the final set pertaining to the foremast supporting the "Positive M-1 3D air search dome are not as yet unavailable to reference . This I am told is a very complex shape to reproduce. These are just a few of the pictures which highlight the issues involved in creating a credible drawing of the foremast that will work for model making! As mentioned I've been keenly interested in developing this project for over 2 years from the moment I first saw Steregushchiy I thought that's my next scratch build project, I firmly hope I can do the ship justice in model form.

Dave,

Just from a cursory examination, I can see that the builder's model photo that you posted initially has several differences compared to the photo of the stern of the real ship. Just goes to show that one has to be very careful evaluating the accuracy of sources! Even a builder's model is suspect!

Can't wait to see this one grow! :woo_hoo:

She's my favorite modern frigate design, a very sleek and elegant vessel. I have the (now sadly oop) Gwylan models resin kit, and while she sticks out like a sore thumb between my predreadnoughts, she's a beauty.

Will be watching this build with great interest.

Yes the picture depiced does not show the stern VDS gate but it's closer than you may think ,I'll stick to the photos anyway builders models can be notoriously vague .
But notice the shape of the stern is not as flat as the first picture would imply
Image
Here the shape changes below the VDS gate .

There is no such thing as an accurate model only degrees of interpretation .

Dave, nice set of photos. What's the function of the two squarish appertures either side of the VDS door? I see that they have very thoughtfully painted scale markings on the stern so that you can work out the size of everything.

Wow!

I have to (shamefully) confess I knew nothing about this ship before this thread. It's hard to imagine something more sleek and modern looking that isn't actually science fiction. Can't wait to see this one take shape. Also very interested in your construction techniques. Looking forward to it! :wave_1:
