This is my first ever ship based scratchbuild (I've built stuff for armour a few times)

I chose Jaureguiberry because as far as I know there isn't a kit out there and I adore the big bottom tumblehome of French Predreadnoughts.

I chose 1/500 because its a scale I rather like. I can get a lot of detail on it but its still not as big as 1/35

So far I've just been forming the basic hull using a combination of scans of original French plans and photos

Its been filled with putty as I want the option of casting it later on if it comes out well.

I've also been working on designing some PE, partly for the master and partly parts that wont be cast, but will be used as PE

I don't know if this will be available yet. if it comes out of a good enough quality I might. if not I might just make a few for myself

Chris,

I'm with you! I have always liked the tumblehome on the old wooden warships. Not many modern ships have it.

I also am interested in the transition era (wood to iron) ships because of all the experimental variations that were tried.

I'll be watching this build.

Phil

The etch has arrived!

some of it will be used to make masters for resin parts, the rest will remain as PE

here you can see I've attached the decks to the hull master but much of the rest is just there as test fits etc

Very nice! Where did you have the photoetch done and what did it cost!?

Looks very nice and indeed this tumblehome on the French Pre-Dreadnoughts is something special.

However, I don't like this etched deck. Looks like freshly mowed pasture with windrows ... There are simply no ditches between the planks. At this small scale, if it has to be pre-fabricated, I would go for a decal or some styrene sheet that has the deck printed on.

Sorry I dont like to discuss actual costs. I hope you understand. it was pretty expensive but thats because I chose to do it on three seperate frets instead of one big one. Each fret has a tooling cost and the more frets the more the price increases. It was done at PPD in Scotland

The deck, which matches the data and plans I have exactly., has revealed some issues with the shape of the handmade hull. I need to do some reshaping yet

Sorry but I do not agree. in my hands rather than in a photo, in front of me, to me it looks fine and the lines between the planks are very fine. Once primed, then cast in resin, then primed again then painted they will be fine in my opinion

I had to look that one up. Black and white images of those tumblehommes are somewhat haunting.

Thanks Story

Finished the hull. Ports and most surface details were etched seperately then applied. Stretched sprue provided the strakes. a coat of Mr Surfacer helps me test the quality of the surface to look for defects

Today's update; the kit PE has been designed. this is not actual size, its been shrunk to meet the site requirements for picture posting. the real one is about A4 size
