Randall in the mid 50's when the movie Away All Boats was filmed had twin Orlikons, At the late war I think she probably still had singles, but here is a 1:120 scale 20 mm MK 20. I have since made a few minor changes to the mount together fit the figure.

Another view of the 20 mm twin Mk20 with gunner. When 3D printing objects can be merged in the slicer which can have advantages. I took one figure and added a larger phone talkers helmet and another added a 20 mm magazine, acting as a loader standing by.

On the left extended handle at the crook is a "hangnail", that is a trigger when the Y handles are used at elevation.

I do this from time to time, when I add details on an object that I did not create myself and that I got free STL file from the internet. But it's still rare.

Well yes, the figures are the only non internally produced items on the ship. I tried some experiments with figures, but alas not a possible capability with my current software and skills. The original .stl files were in 1:35 so a tremendous reduction in scale. As to producing variations, mirroring, different heights and addition of items such as carried items like 20 mm mags. Somewhere out there must be some more suitable "white hat" figures. They print well down to 1:144 but painting at that scale is increasingly challenging.

Have already done that. One can just edit the vertical axis or all three axis simultaneously. Editing a single axis results in some distortion, though in such a small item it's not usually noticeable.

Gosh, I wouldn't want a crew of mutants.... or zombies.

Uniform height is the call of the day!!!

I could print Soldiers/Marines (available) and have them stand in ranks preparatory to launching boats, graduated in size in the ranks? Probably won't do that, who wants to paint hundreds of soldier figures. The mottled Marine camo at this scale would not be feasible (for me). What I need is some "skylarking" figures.

An advantage of 3D printing is the cross polarization for many shared pieces of equipment. My latest three projects, this one, USS Randall, APA 224, LSM 352 and ARL 12, USS Poseidon. all three of these vessels participate in the exercise in the Irish Sea for the invasion of "O' can ah wah". All three use slight variations of the common 20 MM Orlikon and 40 mm Bofors, easy enough to modify slightly as to model and the LSM is 1:133 instead of 1:120, a small scale adjustment. Bothe Poseidon and Randall carried LCVP's, in this case same scale. Randall Carried some various deck cargo of vehicles and armor and the LSM has rom for a greater variety on her tank deck, again just a minor scale adjustment. Then Poseidon has the army jeep won in a poker game.

By traditional methods producing say another 40 mm mount would be again as much work.

For the APA I printed several vehicles for the LSM's and possibly deck cargo. Currently a M4 and a D-7 Dozer reside in the LSM's on the #5 hatch. For the LCVP's I have variously jeeps and trailers and 75 mm pack howitzers.

Not an armor guy, so there! The seem relatively satisfactory for a ship model load and certainly I would have had difficulty producing them in another manner.

I have a couple of these in 1:120 to place in the LCVP's, along with jeeps etc. The famous 75 mm Pack Howitzer which could be broken down into components for transport on mules or airdrop. Also towed by jeeps of man handled.

D7 tractor with adjustable blade as seen in WWII. The hydraulic blade has the advantage of down pressure over the LeTourneau cable blade with an overhead cage. During the Alaska "Pie-Pline" I variously ran D6-D9 Cats, great fun!

These printed in 1"=10' scale, not sure what that works out to in Parsec's per Furlong. Printed in one piece. I did have basic dimensioned plans, but the biggest help was from a detailed assembly someone did of a 1:35 model showing all the running gear in detail!

I'll have to get around to photographing the crew topside as she passes back under the Golden Gate on return from the Pacific. Last count 120 or so populating various positions on deck.

In the movie, the ship wasn't quite so ready for sea on her shakedown to Pearl Harbor.
