As I said, I have been working on this ship along with the United States and Germantown. As I started laying out the gun ports, I noticed a small notation near the stern at the Rail cap mentioning a poop. I know there are two banks of windows on the stern gallery, but there is only one bank on the quarter gallery so, I did not think about it at the time as it was not important yet. Now however I need to think about the ships bulwarks (sides) both bow and stern. and the type of carronade she will carry as that alters the height of the gun port and it distance from the deck. I want to lay semi permanent rail caps to help keep the sides even. There does not seem to be any definitive clue as to where the Quarterdeck/poop deck starts, and I do not think this ship is as well documented as the Columbus where we know where the poop starts. There is a thin "hidden from view" line on the spar deck arrangement just inches behind the third gun port from the stern. You see a full pin rail behind the mizzen and other normal furniture for that location, so the wall of the poop cannot go much forward of that hidden line. It just seems to me that that makes for pretty close quarters for a carronade in that third gun port. No room for side tackle unless the wall is reinforced at a location where the tackle eye bolt would be attached near the wale? Now, maybe this is similar to the Ohio? For which there does not seem to be any sign of one on her drawings either. In fact I do not believe I have ever seen a US ship print with one drawn in? Anyhoo, I would REALLY REALLY appreciate it if some one out there could shed some light on this poop deck, other wise I am going to have to go less than historically accurate and guess.

Are you posting these builds on the Model Ship World forum?

https://modelshipworld.com/

It is mostly oriented to sailing ships and there are a lot of folks there who might be able to give you an answer.

Which Delaware are you building? The 24 gun frigate (1776), the 20 gun ship (1798) or the 74 gun ship (1817)?

From the drawings you posted it looks like the upper windows are for show - perhaps a couple of stern gun ports and the rest fake windows for decoration. But the drawings show two stern gun ports on a lower deck.

The drawing shows the poop deck at the top rail level. Maybe it was open at the front, with no forward wall or bulkhead? Then it wouldn't interfere with the carronade.

Phil

This is the 74 Delaware. I contacted a friend of mine who pointed me to a series of books "The Image of War: 1861-1865" by the National Historical Society. There are many photos of the Delaware and New Hampshire with seamen posing in front of the poop bulkhead. I should be able to get what I need from them.

3B's,

Very nice, indeed!! Your "fleet" of U.S.N. Sailing Navy is quite impressive - do post more photos and keep up the wonderful work!

Hank
