Have started scratchbuilding the SS Independence. This model will be finished with the "Sun Face" paint scheme and should make an interesting addition to my 1:600 fleet. I started about 3 weeks ago so the model is still in the early stages. I'll post some pics as the build develops.

Excellent work so far :thumbs_up_1: Hopefully she will be stopped in Singapore and brought back to the US for preservation. Happily, it seems NCL America is slowly dying. Your build captures the "feel" of this great ship.

Many thanks.

I've now plated in the rest of the hull sides and have started the long filling / sanding process. The complex curves at the stern are proving quite a challenge........but we'll get there.

Very nice. How are you keeping the curved plates on the bow from springing the deck up?

I start the build by cutting out the waterline on plan in 60thou sheet then glue a profile the height of the main deck down the centre of it. The transverse formers are stuck next and the main deck is glued to the top. This means the deck is already rigidly fixed before the side plating goes in. I then start the plating by bending strips approx 5mm wide to the shape of each former and gluing them in place. This defines the shape of the hull at each former. The gaps beween these strips are then filled in with other 5mm strips. Each strip is bent to shape before it is glued and hence there is no tendency for the deck to be pushed out of place. You can see this process in the first few photos.

You must remember to allow for the various sheet thicknesses when cutting otherwise the model will end up being oversized.

Very nice work.

How did you create the wind breaks around the lido? The see through screens really stand out.

I cut out 5 openings to each side. Each opening was equivalent in size to a set of 3 "windows". I did this by drilling out the corners with a 0.5mm drill and then trimming with a 10A scalpel.

When I was happy with the openings I then introduced 2 vertical strips of plastic to form the mullions. This gave the 3 "windows" to each set. The whole assembly was then carefully sanded down to make everything flush.

They will need to be glazed in Micorscale in due course.

I thought of doing the same along the whole length of the promenade deck but I decided to represent those using transfer sheet so that the model would be similar to my other model ships which have their promenade windows represented in black paint.

Ship has been sprayed white ... though the hull might need to be re-sanded and painted. Decks have their undercoat.

Don't think you will have to do much re-sanding and finishing, it looks very nice already! Love the porthole pattern. All those portholes are what keeps me from full scratching large liners .

She's a beautiful model of a beautiful ship, you have done her justice.

Good news-activists in India are raising the alarm and God willing she will be refused entry and we will have a Clemencau redux-it's the best I can hope for.....

Have started applying the transfer strips to create the "sun face" livery. It takes over 100 individual strips to create the effect. The sun and eyes are hand painted. It's certainly a colourful scheme ....!
