Naval gun 12-pounder QF 12, 76mm, 3-inch, 1:33, 3D Printing

Post by Iceman 29 »

The 12-pounder QF 12 cwt naval gun is a 3-inch (76 mm) multi-purpose gun built by the British from the 1890s.
Designed to equip the Royal Navy's "27-knot" destroyers, it also equipped several armed trawlers and served as coastal artillery.

It was then purchased and produced under the name of 76.2 mm/40 Type 41 gun by Japan, which made it the standard secondary armament of its ships between 1890 and 1920. Italy bought and produced them under license by Ansaldo; they were used for anti-aircraft defence during the Second World War.

QF 12 pounder 12 cwt naval gun (serial #11107), CPP 1943. The QF 12 pounder 12 cwt was a 3-inch (76 mm) multipurpose naval gun introduced in 1894 and used until the mid-20th century. It was produced by Armstrong Whitworth, Elswick in England for use on warships, and exported to Allied countries.

In British service, "12 pounder" was a round reference to the weight of the projectile and "12 cwt" referred to the weight of the gun and breech: 12 quintals = 12 X 112 pounds = 1,344 pounds, to differentiate it from other 12 pound guns.

I have done some research and found my match.

This book from the John Lambert collection ( the same as for the armed trawlers) contains all the necessary information and drawings.

There is one of those in Hong Kong at the base of the Kowloon Peninsula, not far from Star Ferry, at the government buildings where the Typhoon warnings were hoisted from a mast.

This gun is not far from being finished. There are still some small flaws to remove, the sighting system and finish the breech.

There are a number of breech variants, with more or less safety.

Then I would switch to the WW1 version. More simple.

Pascal,

Very nice work.

You mention safety. I posted a picture of one of the winches on the OK City (on another forum) and a fellow replied that it had no safety shields and it looked like it could take an arm off in an instant.

I replied that crewmen were expendable, like bullets and baking flour. We had lots of training and drills on safety, but it was only for the safety of the ship.

Tks Phil.

On board you have to keep repeating the safety instructions, it often goes in one ear and out the other.

Start drawing the sighting system, finished the breech. Added small details.

Drawing of the second sighting system which is different from the one on the right and the handwheel actuator which allows to turn the whole gun.

Paint and patina pronounced

Tamiya's Lacquer Paint is great to apply and the result is remarkably uniform, more robust. Nothing to do with acrylic. It covers very well. I never used this type of paint before.

I have started drawing the WWI version.

Image

Image

No plan for this version, some pictures will help me, including this one:

Giuseppe Verdi SS (1915~1928) Yamato Maru (+1943)

On 13 September 1943, the American submarine Snook (SS-279) torpedoed and sank the Japanese military transport YAMATO MARU (ex-Italian GIUSEPPE VERDI). The YAMATO MARU was en route from Mutsure to Keelung with 916 passengers, 3340 tons of cargo and 3000 kg of mail. Four crew members and 29 passengers were killed. The destroyer escort SHIOKAZE dropped 14 depth charges and although it claimed destruction, the SNOOK emerged from the encounter to fight again. More information on the wreck site :

Somewhere I have photos of the excellently maintained 3" guns at the base of the Kowloon Peninsula in Hong Kong. Brass nicely polished! The Tamiya pains look quite good on your weathered mount. Though due to supply chain issues (nearest hobby shop 400 miles away) I have mixed my own Golden Acrylics, the Tamyia paints go on quite well, In my display case I have a 1:550 simple scratch built DE that I did 30 years ago and brush painted with their paints and one cannot tell it's not airbrushed.

A most excellent result!
