A friend of mine is an avid model-railroader. He is building a display set in his basement of the Halifax Harbour area - HO Scale.

He's wanted a ship to go with the display, and I suggested a model of a Flower Class Corvette. He liked that idea, but was hoping for something a bit larger, so I found a free download on Thingiverse for a 1/160 scale Liberty Ship.

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4411101

After some discussion with him over the weekend to see if he wanted me to do it or not - an HO Scale Liberty Ship will be over 4 feet long...and will use probably almost 4Kg of filament...he said yes.

I also chatted with him...and came to the decision that I'm going to build a second ship, this one being a 1/96 scale liberty ship that will go in my 'anchorage' for my own use as an RC ship.

So...I started printing bits yesterday.

I also on Friday took possession of a new Prusa MK3S printer....so I'm printing his on the 3S, and mine on my old Anycubic Mega S.

The first part of his came off the printer this morning, it's the stern section - hull segment 13. I started printing hull section 12 on both printers at about 0700 this morning, and it's a 34-35 hour print job. That'll be done tomorrow about supper time.

My Bonnie project hasn't stopped - but I was running low on 3D objects to print for it...this will keep my printer(s) busy for a couple of weeks while I get some more design work done.

More pictures to follow as things move along.

David,

Thanks, we're printing the files that have been provided on Thingiverse. I suspect they're only 'vaguely' in scale, but for the purposes of a stand-off scale RC Boat in 1/96 for me, that'll be good enough. For my friend's train set - it's more a matter of the upper decks being 'busy' with trains and loading 'stuff' from a railyard, so the hull lines are far less important for him.

If you have the lines/etc, it would be useful. I've had a look at the initial bits that I printed for accessories, and am pondering what I can do to make them a bit better. The lack of detail at 1/160 scale becomes even more sparse at 1/87 and 1/96...

Brad

I decided to add a bit of detail to the original 5" gun design. My friend is a Weapons Tech from the RCN, so guns were...his thing. He worked on both the old 5" and the newer 76mm on the Iroquois Class ships.

Here's a snapshot of the slightly more detailed gun, compared to the original.

While I was at it, I scaled it for the original model (1/160) on Thingiverse, as well as his in HO Scale, and mine in 1/96 scale.

I've completed the ship, and she's sailed as of tonight!

NS:

Would love to see photos of the assembled hulls. On a train layout ships of any sort turn out to be huge items! Best regards for exploring the as yet not common 3D hull printing.

OK, fixed my pictures so they're less than 400K...here are some build pics

File comment: This picture shows the 'double hull' that I decided to fill with wooden supports for a bit more strength.

Here are the supports being sliced up on the table saw, then inserted. Each one is trimmed for length so that they fit and align properly.

Here's some pictures of the rudder in progress.

First was putting in brass tubing as supports in the holes.

Then I added the rudder post and made sure it rotated smoothly.

I put on the 3D printed version of the rudder for sake of form - see how it fits/looks.

Then went to the brass pile and pulled out a sheet of 3/8" brass that I cut a rudder out of.

Drilled the hole for the post, then 3 grub screws to lock it in place.

Sanded it on the bench sander to get the form correct, and picture 7 shows the final version, ready to go.

The original motor I stuck in it was a 380 size...which sadly didn't last out the maiden voyage. I was aiming for an 'underpowered steam ship' look, and overdid the underpowered....

If I'd extended the maiden voyage much longer, I'd have ended up with an onboard fire. I did let the smoke out of the motor, but thankfully no flame.

So, I've had to buy a new motor (540 size) and build a new mount which I'll be finishing up tomorrow and epoxying in place. If the weather holds, I might end up doing a test-drive with her tomorrow.

While I'm at it, I've got a new, better balanced prop from the Prop Shop in the UK that's going to be installed. So, there will be a considerable improvement in performance. I also ordered in an ESS Dual sound kit for it, so I'll be setting her up with a ship's whistle and a steam engine sound.

Depending on weather for the next few days, it should be in the water by the weekend for another test sail!

I still have to pick a name for her though...out of 2500-ish Liberty Ships, surely there is one name that I like!

And here is the 1/88 scale one with my buddy's train layout. It's a good fit!

And....here she is. Essentially complete.

I need a name for her, and a flag pole with a Canadian Flag.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keW4v27 ... nnel=BradB

Very slow in the turn, but with the 540 size motor in her, she almost gets up on plane! I had to limit the speed to 50% in the throttle control!
