Hi Guys,
I just had to share my enthusiasm!
I have no idea how long this will take to build, as the majority of my next 1.5 years is dedicated to a pair of 1/700 ships and a 1/350th Missouri. Just the same....LOOK AT THIS THING!! 55 1/8 inches long! CF Adams class DDG's Rock!
Image
For comparison, I have my 96th Fletcher FRAM next to the DDG Hull, and the Fletcher is 47" long.
Image
I am thrilled to get this model!!!
Had to share!
faithfully submitted, Tony Bunch

Tony,

Fiberglass hull? Who's the manufacturer?

Looks like a great project. I need to build one of those someday.

I've just got in some new photos of USS Barney being scrapped, close-up shots of her in the drydock, showing hull weathering and her sonar dome being removed. They might be of use to you. I'll let you know when I get them posted (hopefully sometime later today).

Hi Guys,
Francisco,
Your enthusiasm is always a good sign to me :thumbs_up_1: !
Devin,
Dry dock pics are good! Can't get enough! Thanks for offering to share!
Yes, the hull is fiberglass. All of the, "fittings", are made of resin...just...very BIG resin parts! The 5"54 mounts are huge compared to the last pair of 5"54's that I worked with.......in 1/700 scale!
I won't be cutting the bottom of of this one!!!!!
ARH,
I guess you're right...the hull is already made for me. I am glad that some of this is already done, as I probably would not have tackled something this size otherwise.
I hope to have a RC-able hull within 6 months. From then on, I can run it and keep the motivation going........a BIG FACTOR! That type of motivation and these too few, "Get togethers", are just what the doctor ordered for a much needed distraction and relaxation.
Check these out!
Only one model there yesterday was actually finished! All 1/96 scale.

Devin the hulls come from the scale shipyard.
I myself have 3 of his hulls, iowa class(USS MISSOURI 1944), essex class(USS YORKTOWN 1944), fletcher class(USS KIDD 1945), next 1 to purchase is the pittsburgh class cruiser hull(USS PITTSBURGH 1944).

Hi Guys,
ARH,
Wet! Indeed! Truly cool!
Chad,
You have been instrumental is this distraction for me. I want to say, Thanks! I got the SPS-49 and the decals yesterday! I owe you big time!
For the record, the Akizuki and the Scharnhorst hulls were made by Dave Manley, (a San Diego friend). The Scharnhorst hull is available from ScaleShipyard. Very nice! I believe all the rest are from ScaleShipyard.
ScaleShipyard :thumbs_up_1: Lee, Thanks for taking my money! :rolf_3:

Hi Guys,
Chad,
Should I post a pic of Mike's Shangri-La? Just kidding! I don't really know what his ship looked like before, but he said it stayed at the bottom of, "Balboa", for two weeks, and it's being re-built. Big model.
The Nicholas did good...overall. I could outrun most of the other ships. I liked that. It was one of the smallest of the, "big", ships. I did have a time or two when the screws became fouled by submerged grass. You can tell, cuz all of a sudden the model would slow down..dramatically; of course then I'd think my batteries were going down also. Nope, just more grass in the screws. I am learning. I broke the mast I just built..and cracked the scuppers on the main deck by trying to get the model out of the water by using one hand.....bummer. I probably had the most fun playing, "cat and mouse", with a guy and his Skipjack class SSN. He'd submerge, and more or less disappear. I'd immediatley start a cricle search; in increasingly tighter circles, (made a lot easier by having separate/reversible throttles). Some of the time I could see the sub's scope, (or whatever it was..probably a receiver antennae), and that would give him away. He could not dive deep or he would not see his model and maybe hit the bottom, but there was a time or two when he'd pop up with a good, "solution", on MY Model!
I drove James' WWII Iowa on one of the "walk-arounds", while my batteries were being re-charged. Big model, but you already know about that! Lee Ushaw said his New Jersey could turn a tighter circle than my DD, and I said prove it! It did indeed turn tight circles, but if I reversed the inboard screw and kept the outboard screw turning, I could match him. Then he said, "how about without reversing the screws?"
Good fun!
Timmy,
Yes, the Arizona was complete!

Hi Guys,
Chad,
I don't really know Mike, but he let me use his table while I tended to my DD for a minute. He was very polite.

Looks to be a Lee Upshaw made hull. You probley know how to put in the internal bracing so I dont have to drop a link in.........Ive studied fiber glass hull making for a while then realized making a hull myself is not for me. Im having much better luck plank on frame so Ill stick with it. I almost cracked and bought a 1/96 Ariz from Lee but Im not willing to kick out 499 USD for one...........I would flip if it sank :Tirade: <---------me after sinking.

Hi Guys,
ARH,
I am liking this RC and scratchbuild forum a lot, as I have a lot to learn, and of course, (as you have no doubt figured out), I love to share.
TommyL,
This will be my first RC build, so any input will come as new information. I have been instructed as to the hull strengthening necessity, but not any procedure or specific process.
This will be fun!
Tony Bunch

Oh ok!

http://wmunderway.8m.com/cont/glasshull/glasshull.htm
http://wmunderway.8m.com/cont/deck/deck.htm
http://wmunderway.8m.com/cont/superglue/superglue.htm
http://wmunderway.8m.com/cont/putty/putty.htm

Read these before you even think about starting on that hull if you have no experience with glass.............my experience is little but these helped me understand what was going on. The amount of cash you spent on this hull ( around 289.00 USD ) would make me cry if I made a mistake on it.

You sound like you think Im an expert, I can tell you I am not. I learned the hard way and finally listened to Ron.
