Hi Guys,
After lolly-gagging around, I feel a bit of freedom....or success!
Here are some pictures of the 01 deckhouse as it appears today.
This is about two days of work, (according to Dave M), that took the last 2 months to do. The block of wood was used to attach the 01 deck to, (with the required spacers beneath), to maintain the main deck's longitudinal continuous shape. Next, the transverse deck beams were added for strength, and the vertical sides were added lastly. Much measuring and scribing was done. Like I was taught years ago....."Measure twice, cut once". An ounce of prevention to be sure.
So, here are some pics of the 01 deckhouse after the deck edges have been sanded flush with the vertical sides. Still much to do with the shaping of the attach to main deck surface, and then the vertical, "combings", will be attached. This will be a "check fit as you go", type of procedure.. and will be time consuming. BUT!! The rest of the ships progress and success will invariably fall beck on this task!
The 01 deck and sides are .0625" polycarbonate sheet and the deckbeams are .125" sintra. This sub-assembly weighs in at 9.5 ounces and is 33" long. WE are keeping the superstructure super-light for good, "sea keeping".

After I get this deckhouse and the vertical combings finished, DDG-22 will be ready for her first sea trials, (well actually a fresh water lake), and the radio equipment is situated.
Thanks for letting me share, Tony Bunch

Hi Tony I like the way you have approached the superstructure. Certainly beats plasic and wood more stable I guess with temperature changes.

Hi Tony,

Great thread you have here, it is fun to see how you are progressing with this build. Looks like you have a great group of guys to work with.

I know you told me before when we met at Nationals this summer, but what brand hull is your CF Adams and where did you get it?

I have always loved the looks of the lines of this class.

Best Regards,
Scott

Hi Guys,
Hi Scott! Good to hear from you.
The hull is from ScaleShipyard..in Long Beach...yep that's Caleeefornnn-ya! The hull itself was $179.
I'll be getting some more work done this weekend; if all goes well.
The 9th and 10th of December will come along quickly enough. That's when I wish to get her to sea!
Tony

Hi Guys,
After spending a quiet evening at Daves' watching Battlestar Galactica, the "Dogfight Series", and getting some modeling done, I have about half of the combings finished for DDG-22. This is a simpler task than constructing the 01 level superstructure, but no less functional. The vertical combings will provide positive positioning for the, "will be", removable 01 deck section, and help to keep water out. 1/16" polycarbonate sheet was used for the combings....Thanks Joe.
The rest of the combings will be finished soon, and then the fine sanding of the 01 superstructure mating surfaces for what will be considered, "final fit".
Remember....measure twice, cut once"? Same truism applies here.
Here is DDG-22 as she currently appears...

Hi Guys,
I managed to get over to Daves' Tuesday night. I finished the vertical combings and started to get the 01 deckhouse fit operation underway. This is no simple task, as a whole lotta small sanding and re-fit-checking is in order. I'd like to say that while I am decent with scale drawings, a micrometer and other lesser precision measuring instruments, there is still a lot of resultant imprecision. Now is when sandpaper and small area filing takes place...the eye-hand-hand-tool relationship for final finishing of supposed precision made component final assembly.
wish me luck...er uh...skill.. :thumbs_up_1:
Happy Thanksgiving, Tony Bunch

Hi Guys,
This evening, I got the 01 deckhouse attached with tape for fit check. Of course, without the tape, this very long lightweight piece sits pretty good, but more trimming/fit check/re-trim/re-fit check effort is needed. Also, I had to remove the last 4" of vertical surface from both sides, as this area was too narrow to fit onto the newly installed combings.
Once again, more work in this area is needed.
I did install the new speed controllers and rudder servo. If you go back a ways on this thread, I already had them installed.....well...I had to do it again..this time with new equipment...not loaner equipment for a test run. Remember, Saturday the 9th of December is my, "get it on the water", date to meet.
Here is the DDG-22 with the 01 deckhouse in place for check fit.
The 1/350 Fletcher DD is another of my modeling projects.

Here are Dave and Steve looking over the new Revell 1/72 Gato being made ready for fully operational RC duties.
Cool huh?

more soon, Tony

Hi Guys,
After spending half of the last weeks evenings at Daves', here is what DDG-22 looks like...today....I am by no means finished fitting the 01 deckhouse. Let's just say that the grey paint applied to the hull was celebratory! I'm still trying to decide what the thickness, (in feet on the real ship...to scale down), of the boot topping is supposed to be.........unfortunately the drawings don't help much.
Image
Image
Image
Note: the Adams class rudders are not exactly like these shown. They are as I received them with the hull, and are larger than the pretty much square shape of the real ships rudders. This shape was retained for the RC operation performance concerns. This arrangement offers more rudder area.... I remember hearing, "you can't scale down water...!!!!!"
Image
I cut the 02 level bridge deck from regular 1/16" plexi-glass and its' shape is just about right...see lower left corner of 1st picture..next to the dremel. Also, the battery pack shown will be the power supply; 7.2V NiMh 3600Ma in parallel = long run-time.
I will have her running by next weekends' 96th scale fleet run at nearby Santee Lakes!
Much to do...as always.....

Hi Tony. Very nice, clean and crisp build so far!. I like the smoothness of the final result- as far as the hull goes.

Looking forward to more updates!. :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:
Cheers.
Pachi.

Hi Guys,
A while back I mentioned a deadline to get my 96th DDG afloat. I almost made it, but it was'nt till today that I took any pictures; albeit not on the pond. Sorry for that.
Here are both my 96th scale DD and DDG after getting a fresh water rinse down.

Both ships ran perfectly, and neither took on any water.
I was wondering, but now I know which one is faster......The DDG.
Next pics will either be, "on the water", pics or some pics showing progress above the 01 level.
Tony
Our workshop at Daves' will see less action than before, as Dave and Paige had a baby boy the day before yesterday :woo_hoo:
The weather is sunny and cold..well......cold for SoCal :thumbs_up_1:

Hi Guys,
I had some fun this morning with my Boys/Toys at the Model Yacht Basin; San Diego. This is a salt water pond; made excelusively for model boat operation. Been around for many, many years.
After running my DDG for a while, I got some action shots of the future USS Benjamin Stoddert.
She ran great today...no complaints.
Coming across your screen from left to right....

Forgive me if some of these images look too much the same, but I hope that some of you appreciate the bow wave form etc....as do I. When the batteries were fresh, the bow wave almost came up onto the foredeck! DDG-22 kept up with Dave's Scharnhorst quite well.......
Thanks for letting me share, Tony
ps I got back to work on the superstructure last night...after an 8 week "stall".

Hi Guys,
Dave,
I have not tried to measure the turning radius per se.
Having said that, with two speed controllers, this model will rotate on its axis.
The ship will turn a pretty tight circle at flank speed..having a twin rudder config. A nice smooth swath of water can bee seen as the stern begins its yaw. The turn can be steepened by cutting power to the inboard screw, (of the turn), or if reversed... moreso.
She'll turn inside my smaller Fletcher Class if both are using both motors at full speed, and then entered into a turn.
she turns good, by golly!
Tony

Hi Guys,
I have been working on the bridge and finally got some where!
It's been a while since posting on this thread; frankly because of all of life's other concerns.
I was so happy to get something atached to the completely naked 01 deckhouse, that I am posting again!
After I get a little further along, I'll post some pics.
Just lettin' you guys know that things are still progressing; albeit at a snails' pace!
faithfully submitted, Tony Bunch

Hi Guys,
Hi Joe,
I'll get the pics soon; when I feel there is something that is good enough to share. I move so dxxn slow!
I bought a sheet of polycarbonate .0625" x 24" x 48" for $29.
This is enough to finish the entire model...........I think.
I also got some 1/4" x 6" x 30" White Sintra out of the "scrap bin" at Ridout. They didn't even charge me for this! This is lightweight stuff and will be used for the upperworks interior framing.
I am using the 1/96 scale drawings from Scale Ship Yard that came with the DDG hull. Unfortunately, the drawings only include a profile of the stbd side. :lol_3: I am taking dimensions right off the drawings and transfering them to scribe onto the polycarbonate, (Lexan), sheet. If I do good, I end up with a small puzzle piece that will be affixed permenently to many more, "puzzle pieces".
........."measure twice, cut once"......."check fit twice, glue once"
useful modeler axioms.........
Tony
