Garry,

thank you for the information. The line drawings of the stern keel have really helped a lot :thumbs_up_1: They have stopped me from making a mistake or two

Hello everyone.

Not a lot of progress to report. We had some very bad news in the close family this week so not a lot of time to devote to building.

I managed to get some "therapy" work done on Saturday afternoon and I have started putting the hull on to the frame.

Will be slow again for the next two weeks as I have to go away again for work.

Andrew

Hope everything works out ok mate.

Are you going to run some more stingers towards bow to help with stiffening and shaping bow?

Cheers Bruce :thumbs_up_1:

hi Bruce

Yes I will be stiffening up the bow, but I am not sure of the best way to do it yet. I guess I have a couple of weeks to think about it.

If anyone reading has good ideas, happy to listen

Back in two weeks, but will be checking in from time to time.

Andrew

Hi everyone,

Time for a short update. We have an on going family issue to manage at the moment, so progress on Varyag is a little slow. My father in law has been diagnosed with terminal Brain Cancer so we are spending a lot of time readjusting at the moment. It is particularly hard on my wife and her Mum.

Anyway, I have managed to begin placing the hull on the frame and as you can see from the pics, it isn't looking too bad so far

I was not able to get the 3mm ply to bend around the tight bilge keel curves so I decided to make my own planks for the bends, also from 3mm ply.

I have experimented with some rather nice wood putty that goes on easy and sands back pretty well, it is water based so easy to clean up as well. The sonar dome is carved from balsa. When I have the majority of the hull on, I will turn her over and take out most of the internal balsa.

Once the ply hull and planking is complete, I will wood putty fill and sand to as good a finish as I can get, then I will cover with glass and resin.

The stern transom will also be carved from balsa and cemented to the last frame/bulkhead. Before the glass goes on I will install the centre line keel and install the prop shaft skegs.

Enjoy the pics,

Andrew

in my case is Ceddar from 2mm.
your hull looks good - do you pretend use resin inside?
please when possible update more pics to show us. :wave_1:
p.s. i wish you and family the best for your father in law.
my mom is in hospital too and i
stoped all my modelling work until she feel good.

Hi Norbert, yes I will use fiberglass inside the hull as well.

Thanks you for your kind words.

Andrew

G'day Andrew,
If you have trouble getting the 3mm ply to go round the bow curvature you could use a double layer of 1.5mm balsa sheet (with one layer at angle if possible for extra strength).
She's coming along nicely mate!!

Cheers Bruce :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Cheers Mate,

Thanks for the tip. :thumbs_up_1: I have bought a couple of balsa sheets to experiment with.

Hello Evryone,

Some small progress on my Slava build.

The forward hull and bow sections required the use of planks. I have cut my planks from the 3mm ply sheets. The shape seems to becoming along ok. The hull feels very strong, not sure if I will use glass mat on the outside of the hull or just resin.

Andrew

PS Can't wait to turn her over
