Hi guys,

some progress on the painting detail. Boy has this been interesting - learning how to use a spray gun - Airbrush was too small

Here is a pic of the real thing

Image

Now here are a few shots of my focsle. I think I have the "rubbed" or polished steel deck just about right - the paint is "low sheen" which seems to give a nice polished look and the colour is somewhere between gun metal gray and flat black. These shots were taken at night, so the "Deck Grey" seems to be too dark. In daylight it does not seem that bad and looks better from a distance. The amount of "deck orange" theat gets thrown around will also "lift" the grey.

Bruce, I have started on a stand :cool_2:

Next step for the forward superstructure is the construction of the RBU6000 ( considered buying ready made, but decided I could give it a go) Acknowledgement to DW's master class :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Enjoy!

First step was a prototype, this was the end result of a number of different approaches include plywood!!

Image

The yoke is made from 3 x 2mm sandwich of HIPS, barrels are 3mm dia brass, collars are 3.5mm

I do see a certain Wooley method in there. They've come to my rescue a couple of times as well.

I can give you perhaps a tiny advice on how to (slightly) improve it. I see you cut the collars and tubes at length, yet there is a slight variation. If you want to improve that, you might make a block (of styrene or wood), just as thick as the length of tube you need. Then all you have to do is drill a hole with the collar diameter and put the tube in. Then you can cut around to mark or really cut. After that you do the same for all tubes and they'll have exactly the same length. This way I did my bollards for Chaconia, where I needed a huge amount of same length tubes as well. Just an idea though, I imagine the real piece is smaller than in the pictures, so the difference in length would be difficult to spot anyway!

Great work on that styrene, not easy to drill the holes in such a nice pattern and cut it out without damage! :heh:

Curious to see further updates :woo_hoo:

Thanks Bruce and Norbert for dropping by and your nice comments.

I'm afraid the work, life, family balance has been stretched a fair bit and time to devote to my ship has been very scarce. (but had some lovely time with the family last month :woo_hoo: )

Hopefully as winter comes on,and the "to do list" around the house shortens I will be able to get back to Varyag soon.

Andrew

Managed to sneak a few hours in the shed during the past week. A rare opportunity these days.

On my second attempt I managed to get the angles right and the bridge screens are now done. Cutting out the windows (twice!) was a bit tedious.

You can see the debris from the first attempt.....

Yup definitely making progress mate! looking good!!

Some of the gang here make their superstructure templates out of cardboard first before cutting any styrene...saves on styrene apparently!!

Your post on TF72 is gone as the forum crashed sometime Sunday!! you may want to repost!!

Cheers Bruce :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :woo_hoo: :woo_hoo:

Thanks for the encouragement guys.

Managed to make some good progress on the bridge deck. Took a bit of working out but quite satisfying in the end.

Here are some pics - please don't get too worried about the gap between the bridge and the aft bridge house. Not glued up together yet, but it does all fit nicely, trust me.... :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

A request for some advice. Do I "glaze" all the windows, superstructure and bridge? Happy to hear your thoughts. Enjoy the pics.

Stbd Side - Sorry about the focus :Oops_1:

Image

Port side - droopy deck due to weights being used to hold everything steady. Once glued up, deck will not be droopy
