Look at those little props, or is the transom that big
Looks very good on the water!
I also like your clean paintwork, very surprising given the fact you work in a shed.. :cool_1:

Hey Pim are you saying my Aft is Fat!! :heh: :heh: She has approx. 65mm props they just look small out of the water. I actually do all my painting outside!!And only when its sunny. There are 2 cars in the workshop as well as all my model building gear so no painting inside.

This is one of my other non warship project's a 1/72 scale 75m freelance design Anchor handling, Salvage and Towing tug...(see pix) she is at the fitting out/detailing stage (and was originally supposed to be a simple/cheaply/ built rescue boat for when other boats have "ISSUES") her completion has dragged on due to health issues last year and to many projects!! (there is a detailed build for her on the RCgroups website) She has twin fixed korts (60mm) and a bowthruster.

Cheers Bruce :cool_1: :cool_1:

Was inspired to make a start on the solid masts by a clubmates use of pvc pipe for a funnel! I used some 42mm dia. pipe as the internal structure then added 8 rib's to the outside to make up the cone piece with a ring at the point where the shape changes at the lower section (not sure how to do this bit yet!) Then wrapped the upper section with .5mm styrene sheet and glued inplace, it needs a bit of filler to even up the surface but at least its strong and light (ish!). Having the center hollow will make it very easy to run wiring for the two radar motors (SPS48 and SPS10) plus mast lighting.
Still need to make up the yardarms but have an idea of a square brass tube core for stiffness with styrene outside sanded to shape.

Here are some pix. Plus a couple test fitted with the laser cut mast platforms from the laser cut superstructure kit by NELCADS :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Cheers Bruce

Luckily I was checking some of my research pix last night and realised I had the two upper radar platforms (for the SPS48 and 49) reversed!! Sorted now... cut some holes in the fwd mast for the two reactor exhaust pipes and cut some evergreen tube to suit, I plan to have a PC fan vent internal hot air out thru these eventually, with some vents on the aft Superstructure allowing fresh air in.

Also cut up a ping pong ball to use as the SPQ-9a radome on aft side of rear mast!

more pix... :woo_hoo: :woo_hoo:

I have been busy working on the mast structures which means I made a mess sanding filler in the workshop again! Gave both masts a plastering of auto filler over the foam around base and a light layer over the styrene conical section to even it out. Much'o sanding later with the detail sander and the masts look like they will do. Put a coat of flocoat resin over them today to fill any smaller marks. They have a bit of weight to em' but it shouldn't be a problem on such a big model!! only one pic!!

Cheers Bruce

Thanks Dave, :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Its amazing how much you can get done when you get on a roll with ideas for building parts!! While the flocoat has been setting on the masts I set about making the pair of yardarms out of some Evergreen styrene. The yards consist of a 4.8mm square tube centre with two bits of 2mm x 6.3mm either side and various bits of 2mm x 4.8mm strip to fill in and build up bottom of center section before filing the bottom edges to get the correct taper.....I'm glad that's done! It was a lot of filing!

Then I got the masts, mast platforms and some of the larger resin fittings for a bit of a photo session to see how it all looked. :cool_1: :cool_1:

Sanded back the flocoat I put over the filler to even up the surface on the masts. It still needs a little more tiding up but overall very happy with how they turned out.
No more updates on California for a little bit as I have got stuck into working on my mates ANZAC class FFH (in the background of the pic!) once the ANZAC is done I can work on my own ships!! Plus I need the bench space to make up CGN36's scratchbuilt detail parts!!

Cheers Bruce

Yeah I had a mental block with the ANZAC build for along time! Just could not get motivated to work on her! Oddly it was while working on Cali that I was able to get re energized on ANZAC!! I also have my Type23 HMS Iron Duke I would like to get stuck into!!

Cheers Bruce

Went out to the shed Monday to work on my old Ford panel van so I can get rid of it and got sidetracked working on Cali!! Attached the fwd bridge faces and side sections to the bridge deck floor, then yesterday attached the bridge window pieces and today made up some bits for the single side window sections and made a rear interior wall (with centerline doorway) and passageway walls behind!! (not that you will be able to see the passage !!) Now to do the interior of the bridge.....

Merry Beermas... :heh: :heh:

Thx Fellas,

Here is a pic of some interior bridge details and the upper bridge section, not going to go to crazy as you won't be able to see much in the bridge unless the lights are on!

Cheers N Merry xmas all!!

hi bruce adding detail that is not easy to see is a labour of love, most people will not see it,but you know its there, and that's what counts most.
