1:110 HMS Anson - progress to date

Post by Grandad »

Plans from the NMM. I carved the hull from lime, a real pleasure to use, but mighty expensive to buy. Yes, you can see 2 hulls in the first photo, whilst I carved mine I carved another, of a different ship, for a friend.

The interior is hollowed out to save weight, to stop the hull from cracking, and so I can use the waste elsewhere.

The barbette on the rotary table in the milling machine to cut the 14 flat sides. Why 14, it makes life so difficult as 14 is not divisible into 360, giving 25.71 ? These Victorians were fairly potty!

Welcome Grandad . Jim told me that you had started to post , traditional scratchbuilding and a wonderful subject :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: . Just returned after visiting Chatham and the reserve collection , my mind and eyes are in a spin but the reserve collection at the FAA is out of this world, so many ship models. :cool_1:

Please explain what you are using that's "lime". Is that what I'd call plaster of Paris?

Ah... basswood we call that here in the Colonies. Yes, expensive indeed.

Thank you the info and I learned something.
