Judging from the photo, the end supported by the female assistant, looks a lot bigger than the 14.2" diameter claimed in the text.

Nope, looks right to me - get your typical 12"/30cm ruler out, and position your arm the way she is. Then place one end of the ruler at the crook of that arm, and see where the other end is - it'd be somewhere around your nose. Add an extra 2" to compensate for photo angles and individual height, and the torpedo in that photo is easily within the size range specified.
