Pentagon Confirms Russia Has a Submarine Nuke Delivery Drone
This is very bad news.

The Pentagon has confirmed that a new Russian nuclear delivery drone is real. The undersea drone, which carries an enormous nuclear warhead to destroy coastal cities and military bases, was tested late last month. The test was leaked by unnamed sources to The Washington Free Beacon.

Russia calls the system "Ocean Multipurpose System 'Status-6," and it is allegedly capable of traveling underwater to distances of to 6,200 miles. It can submerge to depths of 3,280 feet and travel at speeds of up to 56 knots.

The U.S. intelligence agencies estimate Status-6 will carry a multi-megaton thermonuclear bomb payload. For comparisons' sake the bomb dropped on Hiroshima was 16 kilotons, several orders of magnitude smaller. A one megaton bomb is the equivalent of 1,000 kilotons—one one million tons of TNT. Reports from Russia indicate the bomb could be as large as 100 megatons.

Status-6 is designed to attack enemy coastal cities, ports, shipyards, and naval bases.

It is very worrying that Russia is investing heavily in nuclear weapons. As their economic problems increase they may feel that these weapons are more "cost effective".

Nuclear war is closer now than at any time since the 1960s.

Wasn't this leaked in error on Russian TV over a year ago?

Russia Tests Underwater Nuclear Drone, Report Says
Tom O'Connor
Moscow has reportedly begun testing an underwater nuclear weapon that has been touted as invincible by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Poseidon, previously known as the Status-6 Oceanic Multipurpose System and dubbed Kanyon by the U.S.-led NATO Western military alliance, is a state-of-the-art nuclear-capable drone being developed by the Russian armed forces. Citing a defense industry source, the state-run Tass Russian News Agency reported Tuesday that the Russian navy had begun trails for the weapon at sea.
"In the sea area protected from a potential enemy’s reconnaissance means, the underwater trials of the nuclear propulsion unit of the Poseidon drone are underway," the source said, according to the official outlet.(...SNIPPED)

I don’t think Russian nuclear weapon is any more threatening now than before. The key point to remember that the major use of nuclear weapon is to be convincingly threatening. Russia has felt for a long time the credibility of her nuclear threat is in danger with deployment of American ballistic missile defence to Europe and Asia, and the encroachment of nato territory even closer to Russia proper, opening the potential for BMD is degrade Russian nuclear threat even more.

So what Russia is doing is simply to restore her nuclear arsenal to the same degree of credibility as it had enjoyed before BMD by providing a means of bypassing BSM.

The problem is that at the moment Russia is an aggressive nation which seems to be conducting an undeclared, low-level war on the West. The BMD is a response to a threat that is, rightly or wrongly, perceived by the West to be potentially a nuclear one.

Tactical nuclear weapons are intended to make winning a conventional war easier (and cheaper). In our minds nuclear weapons may all be piled in a heap and labelled: "For Political Use Only" but if an unstable leader decides that they are willing to take a gamble, then things can quickly escalate.

Not all people's thought processes work in the same way. To some, tactical nuclear weapons and strategic nuclear weapons are designed to do different things.

A simplistic mind might miss out a few important steps and arrive at a conclusion that is not supported by facts. That kind of mind may also decide that the use of a tactical nuclear weapon will not elicit a similar response from a nation that has more to lose.

We have had nuclear weapons for just over 70 years. At the moment we are at the beginning of a shift in the balance of power in the world. Who knows where it will lead and who knows what value system will emerge at the end of it? Already the economic and moral values of the West and China are changing.

What does the future hold?

We need to be negotiating an end to tactical weapons and reducing strategic weapons to a bare minimum. Any defensive systems should also be up for negotiation.

Russia reveals new details of ‘Poseidon’ underwater nuclear drone
Jan 4, 2019
in Maritime Security, News

Russian TASS news agency has revealed some new details of ‘Poseidon’ underwater nuclear drone.
The ‘Poseidon’, also known under Ocean Multipurpose System Status-6 or “Kanyon” by the U.S. intelligence community, is a new Russian strategic drone propelled by a miniaturized nuclear reactor.
According to the news report, the maximum speed of the ‘Poseidon’ drone will be more than 107 kt (200 km/h), the maximum depth at which it can move is more than one kilometer. For comparison, the maximum speed of modern nuclear submarines is 32 kt, torpedoes – 48 kt.
The high speed of ‘Poseidon’ will be made possible is due to supercavitation, whereby a gas bubble, which envelops the torpedo at maximum speed. This minimizes water contact with the torpedo, significantly reducing drag.
Also, TASS claimed that the newest Russian underwater UAV will be impossible to attack due to the peculiarities of its maneuvering.(...SNIPPED)
