I personally would not give those exercise results any credibility whatsoever. They are just that a simulated exercise and do not reflect reality in any sense of the word. I could go on but just don't have the time.

The article pretty clearly states it doesn't know all the parameters of the article, so it is almost impossible to draw any conclusions.

Often times in exercises such as this, destroyed units are allowed to continue their mission to maximize training value to. It is entire possible the submarine was "sunk" (possibly multiple times) prior to reaching attack position and "sinking" the USN ships. It's possible the article is what it sounds like- a single French submarine went to town and destroyed an incompetent USN task force. But without context, who knows.

25 kts underwater???!!!

That is faster than most WWI era Surface Combatants.

But....

Given where the exercise took place (off the Florida Coast), the Saphir did have plenty of places to hide, given the relatively shallow depth of the water, and that the bottom is littered with WWII era wrecks.

But, as has been mentioned.... No way to know what happened for sure.
