First you have the Type 26, then the Type 31, and now you have yet another frigate class? One would think having just one class would simplify logistics, the whims and political connections of various shipyards be da*ned.

The new Type 32 Frigate will be built in addition to the Type 26 and Type 31 Frigates in the hopes of bringing the escort fleet up to 24 vessels from its current 19.

This comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced what the Ministry of Defence have called “the biggest investment in the UK’s Armed Forces since the end of the Cold War”, confirming an injection of £16.5 billion over four years.

Referring to his promise to “restore Britain’s position as the foremost naval power in Europe”, the Prime Minister added:

“If there was one policy which strengthens the UK in every possible sense, it is building more ships for the Royal Navy.”

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said today:

That is interesting. It would be really strange to built three different frigate types instead of more of the same.

As far as I understand is the figure not related to it - because that would indicate an enlarged River class ship.

My mistake.

The picture embedded in my original post is from a Forbes article from an image search using the term "Type 32 frigate."

The other site's settings wouldn't allow me to copy the original Type 32 concept picture at the UK Defence Journal link and wouldn't allow me to save it in a format that was friendly to Flickr hosting.

No problem, the figures there also do not show the Type 32 - at least according to the articles I found it is not clear what the Type 32 will be. The best guess was a "Type 31 batch 1, which could be based on a different design"...

They don't know what it will be yet, it's just a placeholder for budget considerations.

Most likely will be a batch 2, but anything could happen.

maxim, doubt very much it will different design based on a Type 31 batch 1 as previous designed batches for RN ships was always based on the original class lead ship such as the Type 42 having 3 batches.

That was a statement from the article I referred to. If a second batch of the Type 31 would be a different design, it would make sense to call it Type 32 instead of Type 31 Batch 2.

For sure, a second batch of the Type 31 would make more sense than building three different frigate designs at the same time.

Seems all 3 future frigate types will have more upcoming hull numbers:

In addition to 8 Type 26 Frigates and 5 Type 31 Frigates, Scottish shipyards will also be building an unspecified number of Type 32 Frigates.

Ben Wallace, the Defence Secretary, recently stated that Rosyth would be building Tytpe 32 Frigates in addition to Type 31 Frigates.

“We are committed to building the Type 26 in the United Kingdom; it is under construction on the Clyde. In Rosyth, work is ongoing to build the facility needed to build the Type 31s and the subsequent Type 32s. He also knows that I recently recategorised the future Fleet Solid Support ship as a warship. I intend to make sure that, if not entirely, there is a considerable degree of UK build in that process, subject to tender. I have to be cautious about the contract, because the competition is to begin soon—very soon.”
