From what I saw in a forum search, there doesn't seem to be a thread on this subject yet:

Raytheon Anschütz integrates WECDIS in UK Type 26 Global Combat Ship Program

Raytheon Anschütz announces the successful integration of Warship Electronic Chart Display Information System (WECDIS) into their Integrated Navigation and Bridge Systems (INBS) for the UK Royal Navy Type 26 Global Combat Ships.

In support of the Type 26 Global Combat Ship program, Raytheon Anschütz has completed the critical design review for the integration of the Royal Navy’s fleet-wide STANAG-compliant WECDIS charting software into the Raytheon Synapsis Integrated Navigation and Bridge System. Further, already in 2016, Raytheon Anschütz successfully completed the integration of WECDIS into another UK warship program.

BAE-Leonardo ammunition could triple Type 26 Frigate gun range
By
George Allison -
July 5, 2017

BAE Systems and Leonardo have announced new precision-guided ammunition that could see the effective firing range of the Mk 45 naval gun tripled, the same gun that will be fitted to the Type 26 Frigate.

Last year, BAE received a $245 million contract from the Ministry of Defence to provide the gun system, known as the Maritime Indirect Fires System (MIFS), for the Type 26 Global Combat Ship. Under the contract, the company will manufacture three MIFS Integrated Gunnery Systems (IGS) and one trainer system for the UK Royal Navy. The MIFS IGS includes the 5-inch, 62-caliber Mk 45 Mod 4 Naval Gun System, along with an automated ammunition handling system, gun fire control system, and qualified ammunition.

The Mk 45 naval gun is widely used by the US Navy and allied nations.

Multi-billion pound deal signed for first three new Type 26 frigates

02/07/2017

The first of the Royal Navy's next-generation frigates will be laid down before the month is out after a £3.7 billion order was placed for three Type 26s.

Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon today announced the contract with BAE Systems to deliver the first batch of global combat ships.

They will be the first three of eight vessels to replace the equivalent number of specialist submarine-hunting Type 23 frigates currently in service.

Shipbuilding yards on the Clyde will be responsible for building and fitting out the trio, with the first of the as-yet-unnamed class entering service in the mid-2020s.

The work will support and sustain 3,400 jobs - half in the shipyards, half in the supply chain providing parts.

"The work will support and sustain 3,400 jobs - half in the shipyards, half in the supply chain providing parts."

That sums up the UKs defence policy nicely. It is all about jobs and not about providing a joined up strategy for the defence needs of the UK. Hence the new OPVs that the navy does not want.

Rolls-Royce to Supply Propellers & Mission Bay for Type 26 Frigate

February 2018
Posted On Thursday, 22 February 2018 15:41

Rolls-Royce has signed two contracts with BAE Systems to supply low-noise propellers and mission bay handling technologies for the UK Royal Navy’s new Type 26 Global Combat Ship. The contracts cover the first three ships - the first of which is currently under construction at the BAE Systems shipyard in Glasgow.

The Rolls-Royce Mission Bay Handling System

The Type 26 is designed with modularity and flexibility in mind and a key feature which sets it apart from competing designs is its mission bay. The Rolls-Royce Mission Bay Handling System, will enable efficient movement of craft and containerised mission packages within the mission bay. It also features a launch and recovery capability.

Each ship will feature two Rolls-Royce fixed bolted propellers, designed for extremely low underwater-radiated noise, suited to the ships’ key role of anti-submarine warfare.

LONDON — Britain’s Royal Navy is to equip it’s new Type 26 frigate fleet with Lockheed Martin’s Mk 41 Vertical Launching System for missiles.

Warship-builder BAE Systems has signed up Lockheed Martin to deliver Mk 41s for the first three of the anti-submarine warfare frigates it has under contract.

The Royal Navy is currently slated to operate a fleet of eight Type 26 frigates, with the first of the warships being handed over in the middle of the next decade to replace Type 23 frigates.

According to Warship World magazine the first three ships will cost that much. I think the US has set a figure of $850 Million for each of their FFX frigates which means half the cost of the UK ships.

The UK government has set a cap on the Type 31e frigate of £250 Million so each Type 26 will be worth five Type 31es.

At the same time the UK has set aside £40 Billion (£30 Billion plus a £10 Billion contingency fund) for four replacement Trident subs.

Am I the only one who thinks they have got their priorities backwards? Spending £10 Billion per sub for a weapon that can only be used when there is no hope of survival, whilst at the same time saying there is no money to replace Harpoon which goes out of service this year seems like the very definition of insanity to me.

It is time to abandon the idea that the UK needs to build its own warships. We simply cannot afford to pay the enormous prices just so that we can say we have a shipbuilding industry. Why is the defence of the UK subordinated to the needs of industry, shouldn't it be the other way around?

The real reason is that defence jobs are big with politicians because there are votes in them thar hills.

The Type 26 Frigate could be the most capable Royal Navy warship in decades if funded properly

The Type 26 Frigate, or ‘City class’, represents one of the most capable warships the Royal Navy has owned in decades, albeit one of the most costly.

The City class will replace 8 of the 13 Type 23 frigates of the Royal Navy and export orders are being sought after by BAE. The programme has been underway since 1998, initially under the name ‘Future Surface Combatant’. The programme was brought forward in the 2008 budget at the expense of Type 45 destroyers 7 and 8.

Shouldn't it be unofficially called the Glasgow class then since she's the first to start construction?

I assume that they are officially called Type 26, but there is a custom of calling the class by Type or name according to preference. The Southamptons are often called the Town class, the Type 12s are Whitby or Rothesay sub classes, The Type 45s are Darings, etc.

From last month:

Save the Royal Navy

Quote:
April 26, 2018
Why will the Royal Navy not have its first Type 26 frigate operational until 2027?

Defence Procurement Minister, Guto Bebb stated in Parliament on 23rd April that the first Type 26 frigate, HMS Glasgow is due to be accepted from the builders in the summer of 2025. Eighteen months of further trials and training should see her become operational in 2027. Here we ask why the navy must tolerate such a leisurely eight-year construction schedule.

The Type 26 promises to be a superb submarine hunter and, if adequate investment is made in equipping them with the right weapon fit, they have the potential to be one of best surface combatants in the world. They will be the backbone of our anti-submarine capability and escort for the QEC aircraft carriers, in a world that everyone agrees is becoming more dangerous.

For the Royal Navy, obtaining replacements for the venerable Type 23 frigates has been like chasing a mirage. Successive governments, the RN and the MoD dispensed with concept after concept, for more than 23 years, (spending £millions in the process) before steel was finally cut for HMS Glasgow in July 2017. You can read the 14,000-word Think Defence account of the absurdly convoluted history of the Type 26 which started with the ‘Future Escort’ as far back as 1994. From early concept studies to HMS Glasgow commencing sea trials will be half a lifetime – 31 years.

BAE Systems Wins Australia’s SEA 5000 Tender with Type 26 - Hunter-class Frigate

Posted On Friday, 29 June 2018 09:09

BAE Systems has welcomed the Australian Government’s announcement of its selection as the preferred tenderer for the SEA 5000 program to deliver nine Future Frigates for the Royal Australian Navy. The overall announced program is expected to be in the region of AUD $35bn for the design, build and support of the ships.

The Global Combat Ship – Australia is based on BAE Systems’ Type 26 frigate, one of the world’s most advanced anti-submarine warships, which the Company is currently constructing in Glasgow for the Royal Navy. Once contracted, the new ships, to be called the Hunter class, will be built in South Australia by an Australian workforce, using Australian suppliers from every state and territory.

BAE Systems Chief Executive, Charles Woodburn, said: “BAE Systems’ selection as preferred tenderer for SEA 5000 reinforces our position as a leading designer and builder of complex maritime platforms. I am proud that our world class anti-submarine warfare design and our approach to transferring technology and skills to the nations in which we work is expected to contribute to the development of an enduring world-class naval shipbuilding industry in Australia.”
