I dont understand exactly the role and evolution about deck edge antennas on Aircraft Carriers, (the ones who are around the hull, who are stand up vertical on some pictures, and sometimes horizontal all around). Some models get it regularly from the stern to the prow, sometime its grouped on the middle, sometime its just on one side... sometime they are'nt visible at all...
Why this disposition is only visible on aircraft carriers ?
How does it work exactly?

With first half of the 20th century radio equipment, the only way to get a longer distance signal was to use a long wavelength radio wave, and the only way to transmit and receive a longer wavelength was to have a longer aerial wire. On conventional surface ships, the longest aerials would be spread between the masts and they wouldn't be in the way of anything, but an aircraft carrier has only a small island and this isn't possible. So they put small masts on the deck edges to spread the long aerials as long as they needed. The masts are still a very big hazard to flight operations, so they pivot down to horizontal when the flight deck is in use. How many masts and where they are is just up to individual designs.
