Royal Navy a 'laughing stock' with three quarters of its warships out of action and 'struggling to protect British citizens'

HMS Ocean was sent to the Caribbean for hurricane relief but has now been delayed by engine trouble - contributing to Britain being seen as a 'laughing stock'

The Royal Navy can only send a quarter of its warships to sea due to spending cuts which have left the armed forces "struggling to protect Britain's citizens", the Telegraph has learned.

Currently 13 of the Navy's 19-strong fleet of Type 23 frigates and Type 45 destroyers are unable to go to sea due to a lack of manpower, fuel and supplies, senior military sources have revealed.

The cuts to defence spending have also severely hampered Britain’s response to Hurricane Irma.

Hey at least they have a navy to protect their relatively tiny landmass. As a Canadian i feep rather embarrassed that our navy is smaller than the Philippines. In fact ours is smaller than those with less adjacent ocean area. Not to mention our navy too is struggling to maintain a seaworthy fleet for what it meagerly is.

As someone who's a dual citizen of both the Philippines and Canada, I think your comparison is rather exaggerated.

The Philippines only uses 3 ex-USCG Hamilton class cutters as frigates, and the 3 ex-RN Peacock class corvettes, and none of these six ships have CIWS or Harpoons fitted.

Meanwhile, all of Canada's 12 Halifax class frigates are in service, and have Harpoon missiles, CIWS and ESSM, so the RCN is in a much better shape than the Philippine Navy. Furthermore in Canada has 4 ex-British submarines, while the Philippines doesn't have any subs or even ASW capability for that matter.

The Philippines may have many more smaller patrol vessels as well as an amphibious fleet and even its own Marine Corps, but they still have to make do with a smaller defense budget and often aging equipment. And the lack of modern weaponry like SSMs means they cannot stand toe-to-toe against Chinese warships like a Chinese Type 52C destroyer.
