'Signals detected' from missing sub
BBC News

Signals have been detected that are thought to have come from an Argentine submarine that went missing with 44 crew on board, officials say.

The defence ministry is now trying to trace the location of the seven failed satellite calls received on Saturday.

Argentina has stepped up the search in the South Atlantic for the ARA San Juan submarine, with a Nasa research plane joining in.

The diesel-electric vessel disappeared 430km (267 miles) off the coast.

More than 40 on missing sub may have only day of air left

The ARA San Juan has been missing in the South Atlantic since last week. More than 40 members of an Argentinean submarine have been missing for more than a week, prompting worries about how long they can survive.

The ARA San Juan has not been heard from since last Wednesday, when it reported a battery problem and told superiors in Argentina’s navy that it was going back to port from the South Atlantic.

But the San Juan’s homecoming never materialized, and an international assembly of rescue ships from countries such as Brazil, the United States and the United Kingdom have not found any trace of the vessel.

Missing Argentine submarine 'is located by US Navy and a new sonar signal heard' as rescuers race to the spot with oxygen due to run out imminently

The missing Argentine submarine may have been located early this morning, after a US Navy aircraft allegedly detected a 'heat stain' from 230ft below the surface, some 185miles from the coast, and a rescue vessel separately reported hearing a sonar signal.

The Daily Mail's story may have been premature.

From Australia news.com.au November 23, 2017 8:48am

"Clues dismissed as investigators admit they have ‘no trace’ of submarine"

THERE is still no trace of the Argentine submarine missing for a week. But not everyone is happy with the help in trying to find the missing crew members.

HOPES that the missing Argentinian submarine may be found have been dashed after investigators conceded they “have no trace” of the vessel.

The ARA San Juan went missing seven days ago with 44 crew members on board, and the fear is that the oxygen on board has now run out.

Clues emerged overnight that pointed to the possible whereabouts of the missing sub — a sound signal, flares and a “heat spot” — but these have been dismissed by officials.

Sound heard in Argentine sub search was likely 'explosion'
by ALMUDENA CALATRAVA and LUIS ANDRES HENAO, AP

MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina --
An apparent explosion occurred near the time and place an Argentine submarine went missing, the country's navy reported Thursday, prompting relatives of the vessel's 44 crew members to burst into tears and some to say they had lost hope of a rescue.

Navy spokesman Enrique Balbi said the search will continue until there is full certainty about the fate of the ARA San Juan, despite the evidence of an explosion and with more than a week having passed since the submarine disappeared. It was originally scheduled to arrive Monday at Argentina's Mar del Plata Navy Base.

The U.S. Navy and an international nuclear test-ban monitoring organization said a "hydro-acoustic anomaly" was produced just hours after the navy lost contact with the sub on Nov. 15. It was near the submarine's last known location.

"According to this report, there was an explosion," Balbi told reporters. "We don't know what caused an explosion of these characteristics at this site on this date." The navy spokesman described the "anomaly" as "singular, short, violent and non-nuclear."

From Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO)
http://www.ctbto.org.convey.pro/l/XopEon7

On 15 November 2017 two CTBTO hydroacoustic stations detected an unusual signal in the vicinity of the last known position of missing Argentine submarine ARA San Juan.

Hydroacoustic stations HA10 (Ascension Island) and HA04 (Crozet) detected a signal from an underwater impulsive event that occurred at 13:51 GMT on 15 November. The location of the event is as follows: Event Latitude: -46.12 deg; Event Longitude: -59.69 deg which is in the vicinity of the last known location of the ARA San Juan.

Details and data are being made available to the Argentinian Authorities to support the search operations that are underway.

The hydroacoustic stations are part of the CTBTO’s International Monitoring System (IMS) which monitors the globe continuously for signs of nuclear explosions. Low frequency underwater sound, which can be produced by a nuclear test, propagates very efficiently through water. Consequently these underwater sounds can be detected at great distances, even thousands of kilometres, from their source. This is why the IMS requires only eleven hydroacoustic stations to effectively monitor the world’s oceans. HA04 at Crozet Island (France) was certified in June 2017 as the final of these eleven stations.

Argentina ends missing submarine rescue mission

From the section Latin America & Caribbean

The Argentine navy says it has abandoned attempts to rescue 44 crew members on board a submarine that disappeared two weeks ago.

"Despite the magnitude of the efforts made, it has not been possible to locate the submarine," navy spokesman Enrique Balbi said on Thursday.

The sub, the ARA San Juan, last made contact on Wednesday 15 November.

Hopes of finding survivors faded after a suspected explosion was heard near its last-known location.

Argentine submarine: Missing ARA San Juan imploded, navy confirms
3 hours ago
An Argentine submarine which vanished a year ago with 44 crew on board imploded, the Argentine navy has confirmed after the wreck was found.

The ARA San Juan disappeared 430km (270 miles) off the Argentine coast on 15 November 2017.

Officials announced on Friday that it had been found 900m (2,950ft) below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean.

"It appears to be complete, but it obviously imploded," said navy commander Gabriel Attis.

He said the hull was "totally deformed, collapsed and imploded" and debris was scattered over an area of about 70m (229ft).

The wreck was found by the Seabed Constructor, a ship owned by US search firm Ocean Infinity.
