There will be no British LHDs ordered in the foreseeable future, the MoD is having a hard time getting a few frigates from the Treasury.

Speaking of which, if only your MoD would listen to many of the ideas like this one below circulating in the defence blogosphere:

Perhaps an improved Juan Carlos class LHD would be a good choice, much like the ones the Turks want to build?

The case for a new amphibious assault ship to replace HMS Ocean
By

With the recent news that Brazil may acquire amphibious assault ship HMS Ocean, we take a look at the viability of replacing her.

HMS Ocean is a 22,000 tonne amphibious assault ship, the UK’s helicopter carrier and the fleet flagship of the Royal Navy. She is designed to support amphibious landing operations and to support the staff of Commander UK Amphibious Force and Commander UK Landing Force.

The aforementioned news seems to have stimulated considerable debate over the future of Royal Navy amphibious assault warfare ships, and the wider issue of changing capabilities and resources. Currently HMS Ocean, is the flagship of both the Royal Navy and a NATO task force, however, she is planned to be decommissioned this year. The ship cost an estimated £250 million, which is interestingly the target cost for the construction of the new General Purpose Frigates.

The QE carriers will have to make do as helicopter carriers when needed. There will be no replacement for Ocean in the short term and with the cuts to the Royal Marines coupled with a large proportion of them being permanently tasked with shipborne operations as their only role, it is likely that the amphibious capability of the RN will be degraded to a point where it is ditched altogether.

Mistrals for the UK? While the CVFs will be the main carriers of the F35Bs, this is also making me wonder if Ocean or her replacements were originally meant to carry* them as well in the same way US LHDs do...

*Even if Ocean only has facilities to ferry Harriers, but not to operate/maintain them as the Invincibles did before...

Should the UK purchase the French Mistral class amphibious assault ship?
By

With the planned decommissioning of the HMS Ocean in 2018, there is a serious need for the Royal Navy to have a dedicated amphibious warfare capable ship in order to deploy the Royal Marines and a large number of helicopters during a crisis or a conflict situation.

The Egyptians recently purchased two Mistral Warships which were destined originally destined from Russia. The question is: should the UK have purchase similar ships from France? On a strategic level, certainly I would argue yes in the short term, but from a longer term political perspective this would not have been the appropriate decision for a number of reasons including:
