China building its 3rd aircraft carrier (updated)

Post by Haijun watcher »

This future carrier, like the other two, will probably be named after a province as well.

While this will be the 3rd carrier in PLA-N service, it will also be the 2nd domestically-built carrier after the Shandong.

China has started building its third aircraft carrier, military sources say

Work on the vessel, which will use a hi-tech launch system, began at a Shanghai shipyard last year but it is not known when it will be completed

One of the sources said Shanghai Jiangnan Shipyard Group was given the go-ahead to begin work on the vessel after military leaders met in Beijing following the annual sessions of Chinas legislature and top political advisory body in March.

But the shipyard is still working on the carriers hull, which is expected to take about two years, the source said. Building the new carrier will be more complicated and challenging than the other two ships.

CNN
China reveals new domestically-built aircraft carrier under construction

Hong Kong (CNN)The Chinese government has revealed for the first time it has started construction on a new domestically-made aircraft carrier, the third overall in the People's Liberation Army Navy fleet.
In an article celebrating the sixth anniversary of China's first carrier, the Liaoning, state-run news agency Xinhua teased the future of the country's fleet.
"Six years have passed, our domestic carrier has been trialed, entry into service is just around the corner. The new aircraft carrier has also been built on the slipway," the article said.
China's second aircraft carrier, the unnamed Type 001A, was the country's first domestically made vessel of its type and has been running through sea trials over the course of 2018.
But rumors had been circulating in the past year that another, more advanced vessel, was already under construction in China.

China declares it is building a third aircraft carrier. But this time it will be bigger and mightier
China says it has begun work on a third aircraft carrier a new generation ship bigger and mightier than anything it has built before.

Speculation has been mounting for some time, but Chinas state-run news service Xinhua has confirmed a third aircraft carrier to a new design is currently under construction.
China currently has two aircraft carriers, one an ex-Soviet Union vessel Liaoning which was purchased in the late 1990s under the guise of being converted into a floating casino. It was then refurbished as a fully operational warship.
Earlier this year, China launched its first home grown aircraft carrier a reverse-engineered and slightly improved version of Liaoning.

Hmm... no doubt the number of westerners offering "ESL teaching/tutoring services" and living/working locally has probably increased exponentially in the city nearby... but no doubt China's "wai ban/??/foreign office" will be monitoring every one of their smartphone accounts. :heh:

Work is well underway on the next aircraft carrier due to join Chinas fast-expanding navy. A leaked photo now brings us our closest view yet of the vessel, which is set to provide the Peoples Liberation Army Navy, or PLAN, with a significant leap in capabilities, including catap

The as-yet unnamed new carrier, currently known by the designation Type 003, has been under construction at the Jiangnan Shipyard outside Shanghai since at least late 2018. Earlier this week, it emerged that a Tik-Tok user had managed to take a very close-up photo of the vessel, shot from drydock where it is being built, and upload it to that social networking service. The image was deleted soon after, but not before it had been saved and shared elsewhere online.

Looking forward to Trumpeter making and releasing a 1/700 version of her in a few years. It didn't seem that long of a wait for them to put out one of the Shandong.
