Not surprising if true. The US and UK have put too much faith in nuclear boats in recent times despite the advances in AIP technology. It is well known that conventionally powered subs are much quieter and can shut down their engines for tactical purposes whereas the nuclear reactor has to be operating all the time.

I am very surprised that the US has shown no interest in conventional submarines at least for littoral ops.

The main purpose of the US Submarine fleet is to support Fleet operations. A DBF can not keep up with a strike group carrier force. The SSNs run "scout" for these strike groups. That and long range spook missions which only a Nuke can perform..Under ice ops and on and on... The Virginias are among the quietest boats made. This would not happen to a Virginia boat. Or a Seawolf for damn sure.
