US State Department OKs license for submarine tech sales to Taiwan
By: Mike Yeo   3 hours ago

MELBOURNE, Australia ― The State Department has given the go-ahead for American defense companies to market submarine technology to Taiwan to aid in its quest to locally develop and build its own submarines.

According to media reports from Taiwan, the Ministry of National Defense spokesman Maj. Gen. Chen Chung-chi and presidential office spokesman Sidney Lin confirmed that the State Department has granted the marketing license required for the sale of technology to Taiwan.

The granting of the license is a significant step for Taiwan’s domestic submarine program, and Lin added that the decision would upgrade Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities, as well as benefit the safety and security of the region.

But on which technology the submarines themselves would be based? The US did not produce Diesel and especially non-nuclear AIP submarines in the last half of a century.

Taiwan's Navy/the Republic of China Navy (RoCN) really needs replacements for its 4 aging diesel subs (2 Dutch-made, 2 ex-USN Guppy class) in order to stave off the 60+ subs that mainland China and the PLA-N has, when war does come.

Not surprising that EU countries are doing this, but most would've thought they'd be more covert about it and not let Taipei tell the world about it, especially China.

Taiwan says European countries helping with submarine project
Fri., April 2, 2021, 6:35 p.m.·2 min read
TAIPEI (Reuters) - European countries are providing help for Taiwan's indigenous submarine project, the island's defence ministry said, in a rare admission that the sensitive programme is not getting assistance solely from the United States.
Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory, has worked for years to revamp its submarine force, some of which dates back to World War Two. It is no match for China's fleet, which includes vessels capable of launching nuclear weapons.
The U.S. government in 2018 gave the green light for U.S. manufacturers to participate in the programme, a move widely seen as helping Taiwan secure major components, though it is unclear which U.S. companies are involved.
In a statement late Friday, Taiwan's Defence Ministry denied a report in U.S.-based publication The National Interest, which cited Taiwanese news reports from 2019, that North Korea had discussed helping Taiwan with the submarines.
"In the development of our submarines there has never been, there is not now and will never be any contact with North Korea; assistance is all provided by important countries in Europe and the United States," it said, without giving details.

Taiwan’s First Indigenous Submarine to be Launched Ahead of Schedule
July 21,2021, Taiwanese media Liberty Times Net (LTN) reported that the first prototype of Taiwan’s Indigenous Defense Submarine (IDS) is expected to be launched in September 2023.
Tso-Juei Hsu 25 Jul 2021
Taiwan’s first indigenous submarine is now set to be launched in September 2023.
It was reported that Taiwanese top national security officials were looking at speeding up the construction schedule of the IDS, and would like to have the submarine launched in first half of 2024, being delivered to ROC Navy in 2025, because of the massive change in Taiwan-China relations.
LTN quoted an anonymous military official saying that the related institutions have made full inquiries to finish the construction as early as possible all while keeping high construction quality standards, in order to launch the submarine in September 2023 as top national security officials planned.

Taiwan Is Building Eight New Subs Because It Can't Get Them From Anywhere Else
To avoid angering China, nobody will sell submarines to Taipei. So, it must build them itself.

Taiwan has begun construction of the first of eight locally designed and constructed submarines.
The subs will replace an aging fleet of four, including two submarines dating back to World War II.
In an invasion scenario, new subs would be highly useful, but Beijing has pressured sub-producing countries into not selling to Taiwan.

Taiwan held a keel-laying ceremony earlier this week for its first locally produced submarine—the first of a planned fleet of eight.
