See, attachment. (1) What is the rectangular attachment just below deck on outside front hull of the Type VIIC/41 Uboot marked with the blue line, and (2) what is its purpose, and (3) was it added to Type VIIC’s (besides Type VIIC/41s) that were built in the early 1940s but lasted to end of WWII? I notice this U-boat has a Schnorkel, and that plate is located right adjacent to it. Does it have anything to do with the Schnorkel?

I doubt it has to do with the Schnorkel since the plate is on both sides of the boat including the side without a Schnorkel, and the equipment to raise the Schnorkel is near the tower, the plate being near the other (top) end of the Schnorkel.
