Hi folks,

Since many month I'm looking for explanation about a specific device fitted on German Zerstörers during WWII. You will find hereafter a picture of it:

I did not find any explanation about it and I don't know what it was used for. Does one of you have any information about it?

Thanks :thumbs_up_1:

Someone made fun of the IO and hoisted his megaphone up into the mast ... :worship_1:

Seriously, did you post your question in a German forum ? If you want, I can do this in the Forum of the Arbeitskreis historischer Schiffbau, where we have several knowledgeable people on such matters.

This is probably dumb but could it be the national ensign furled on some kind of spindle?

Not sure what it is, but there's a better photo here:

Perhaps a sleeve to keep a signal flag out if site, but ready for rapid deployment?

I have better pictures in Joseph Kaisers Bismarck book where it is called a "Vorheisstülle für eine Flagge", so a prehoisted-flag tube. Wires clearly going through it. The picture suggests a flag is indeed present in this tube.

Seems that the problem is solved then. Didn't receive any answers yet in the AK-Forum.

In the old days flags were hoisted tied together with a slip-knot that could be opend with a jerk on the line.
