Operation to lift sunken Norwegian frigate gets underway

The Royal Norwegian Navy’s sunken frigate HNoMS Helge Ingstad is ready to get out of the water after spending over four months on the sea bottom in the Hjeltefjorden fjord.

As informed by Norway’s defense ministry, weather conditions and forecasts have finally allowed for the operation to start.

HNoMS Helge Ingstad was involved in a collision near Bergen on November 8, 2018. The ship initially spent several days on its starboard side with a significant portion of its body above the waterline before almost completely sinking on November 13.

Report slams Norwegian Navy for training, safety shortfalls in the run-up to frigate sinking
By: David B. Larter   3 days ago
WASHINGTON – The bridge watch team on the stricken Norwegian frigate Helge Ingstad was distracted, inadequately trained and failed to take adequate precautions while transiting close to land, according to an accident report released Friday by the Norwegian government.
The watch standers on Helge Ingstad, which collided with the Maltese-flagged tanker Sola TS and subsequently sunk outside Sture Terminal near the mouth of the North Sea, were busy conducting a watch turnover and attempting to conduct training during the navigation in the channel, which it was conducting at 17-18 knots.

So, regardless of the personnel and training issues, can the Helge Ingstad be salvaged or is she a constructive total loss?

If so, will the navy tender for a replacement? One frigate is a lot of Norway's surface combatant force.

EDIT: The ship has been listed for disposal, having been decommissioned this past summer. Hopefully she will be replaced.

Yes, the ship will be scrapped.

The Norwegian navy asked for two more frigates - as replacement for Helge Ingstad and for old fast attack craft. I have not seen any news regarding a decision.
