hey guys,

i'm making a list (again) of ships to consider building for combat..... only this time its not just speed i want. speed is fine, but also this time i'm considering slower, albiet smaller ships such as monitors or whatnot.

I want something small and low - whether its fast or not doesn't matter, in fact i'm tempted by the idea of something that can just spin in a circle (which a cruiser or destroyer wouldn't).

also, anything that just looks cool works as well!

Reminder tho, it has to be Axis or Triple Entente - anything from between and of ww1 and ww2.

it'd help if you posted pics or drawings.

Yubaro (ijn light cruiser) is on my list.... as well as IJN Mutsuki

How about Vainamoinen or Sri Ayuthia? Are Finland and Thailand considered Axis?

Yubari would be my choice. A unique cruiser with a fine experimental design and nice lines.

Since they are so similar, what would you guys recommend between the two?

Vainamoinen had been done in IRCWCC before. If you can get a copy of Swampy's old video (I think Mikey has one) you can seen the footage of it- it's so-so. The smaller, slower ships don't do as well in "small gun", but I can tell you the HMS Abercrombie in Big Gun was a tough customer. Turned on a dime, no freeboard to speak of- was kinda vulnerable to TT attacks from the Mogami's though. In fact, your Mikuma was sunk by Abercrombie. I'll post the pics when I get home later....

Capitani Romani was a good fighter, but a little unstable. Might not be as big an issue with the smaller stuff.

Are you thinking Small Gun or Treaty Combat?

I've been wanting to build an Abercrombie but its allied... i guess if i built it for Treaty i could go allied?

Regarding the monitors Dhonburi and Vainamoinen I have a very keen interest on both and managed to gather quite some info on the two ships. Which one for you too choose? I would advise you eventually Vainamoinen given that there's more info on her though Dhonburi was made in Japan and many features are equal to the japanese ships.
About Yubari you can have loads of information on her...there's plenty out there. It's also one of my favourite CL's.

Vainamoinen was a coastal defense battleship. The ship was armed with 10 inch guns as a backup for smaller coastal defense boats. During the 'Winter war' Vainamoinen bested a Soviet 7inch gun armed cruiser in a dual. Soviets forced Finland to give them the ship after the war as part of the peace treaty.

For a really off beat cruiser how about the Ratanakosindra. And at 1000tons this ship was a cruiser.

If you want an Axis monitor, how about Faà di Bruno (aka GM 194)? practically zero freeboard with only the turret and a tripod behind it. Stats: 2796 tons; 2 15in, 6 3in guns; 3.3 knots, 1916. Yeah, that's right, 3.3 knots.
Ratanakosindr and Sukhothai: 886 tons; 2 6in, 4 3in DP guns; 12 knots, 1925-30.
Sri Ayudhaya and Dhonburi: 2265 tons; 4 7.9in, 4 3in DP guns; 15.5 knots, 1938.
Väinämöinen, Ilmarinen: 3900 tons; 4 10in, 8 4.1in DP guns; 15.5 knots, 1932-34. I love the giant Q-tip mast.

Sean, how do you think this would do? with flat stern and bow it should have alot of hard area, how many units do you think? i still cant figure that stuff out...

The monitor subsequently got into distress in moderate seas while on her way back to Finland, and had to request a tow from a Swedish coast defense ship.

Yubari was pioneering, but not unusual. All subsequent IJN cruisers looked a lot like her.

I do not believe that's correct. Current Finnish sources try to refute the claims about the ships' poor seakeeping.

well the point is i like her, and thats all that counts! but actually what she had that the others didn't that i like is that gun mount on the bow, how its like an enclosed platform while others werent enclosed.

Bruno'd be a tough ship to do anything with. Really slow and small it would be hard pressed to move enough water to even steer- and with the flat bow and stern, there'd be quite a bit of resistance in the water.

In 1/144 Bruno would be;

15.17 inches long

7.3 inches wide

and draw half an inch.

You would have a hard time making that one work.
